Cheapest Diesel
updated: Apr 24, 2011, 10:13 AM
Where is the cheapest, or consistently lowest price place in town to buy DIESEL? A lot of stations pumps shut off at $75... yeah, like that's going to fill the tank!

I have a diesel golf and even though most of the time I get my fuel for free from my biodiesel co-op (SBBD), I can tell you that I find the best price on diesel at the pump at that station on LaCumbre next to the animal hospital. I think the station is called "Conserve" or some such and has green signage. Yep its even getting past $60 to fill up my little tank.

Hi 168P, loaded question, but I will try: I setup the co-op about 8 years ago. We collect WVO (waste vegetable oil) from a few select local restaurants (total secret, no I wont tell where from), and using a machine we made, mix the veggie oil with methanol and a small amount of lye which cracks off the glycerin molecule from the esther chain. The "glycerol" drops to the bottom of the tank and everything left above is diesel fuel for our diesel engines. I could go on and on about this process and all the politics and baggage around it, but suffice to say that it works and I and a few others have been running on it for over a decade. In the beginning, I had lots of members who wanted to "stick it to the man" and stuff like that, but talk is cheap, and as soon as they found out it required actual work to make it happen, we reduced in size down to about 4 of us old guys, who just liked chemistry and energy efficiency of diesel engines. We cant sell fuel, because their are laws against that. You can run on straight vegetable oil (SVO) but will need a dual tank system because the glycerin molecules get stuck in the injectors unless heated to about 110F. Great for long distance truckers! Not so great for around town driving. Anyone with a diesel engine can do this, but we are not currently accepting new members unless said member has something to offer (supply of clean WVO, space for processing, a processor...etc.)
