Large Photo Printing
updated: Apr 22, 2011, 2:25 PM
I have a gorgeous photo taken by one of the Edhat members of our beach at sunset on a stormy winter day. She gave me permission to print 1-5 copies for her, myself, and my siblings as presents, as the photo perfectly captures our ideal beach walk, and my sister lives far away.
If I want to have a good quality digital photo file blown up to poster size, 20-24" wide by 30-40" high, 3-5 copies, for household display (fabric, canvas, mounted paper...), who's offers the best quality for the best price? I don't need museum quality artwork, but I would like to get a nice print that won't fade and could be nicely displayed for years. (My guess at a reasonable price is ~$35/print for 3-5 prints.) Thanks for your recommendations.

Costco offers the best price. You'll get quality at Color Services, or Samys.

I'm not sure Costco does anything larger than 20"x30". They will print that size for about $9 each (I think) but you will get an unmounted print on paper. And you have to be a Costco member. They have an online ording tool where you can upload your photos. CVS also does the same thing. They will print up to a 20"x30" enlargement for $20. Just like Costco, you can do everything online, and the print is unmounted. No membership necessary at CVS. By the way, if you are going to blow up a photo to that size, it should be at least 6000x9000 pixels. You can get a mounted poster that's larger than 20"x30" right on sale now at Fedex Office for $59 each. Sounds like a lot, I know. I would bet that Samy's is even more than that.

Costco's canvas wrapped prints go all the way to size 40X60. I had one done and it turned out absolutely fantastic. Super quick turn-around and it looks really awesome. Mine is 20X30 and cost $69.99....worth every penny! I think I even had a coupon and it was slightly less. You do have to start with a very high quality image for the best results.

No one beats Costco. At Samy's prices, you can also pay for the membership and still be ahead of the game.

To the OP....as you might have surmised, you can definitely get quality enlargements for the price you are seeking, but there is no way to get them mounted for that price. To get three to five 20"x30"-plus enlargements mounted for household display, you are looking at between $200 and $300, at the best prices.

Costco - all the way! Know at least three people who absolutely love their HUGE print services, especially on canvas. Go for it and let us know the results. Best yet, post a picture of the final results.

OP here -- My concern about Costco had to do with them saying they only accepted jpg files. I'm not a graphic artist, but I know that jpg is lossy, so that seemed like a poor fit for large prints. Right? Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

Most graphics programs (GIMP) allow you to adjust the JPEG compression to a minimum.

When it comes to graphics: Price, Speed, Quality....pick two If you want the best, and the most knowledgeable about graphic files and formats, proofing, substrates, and free pickup and delivery, you might want to give Santa Barbara Giclee / ePrep Services a call. But not going to be as cheap as the bigbox names. They do it right, and on time.
