Does anyone know of a veterinarian who will come to a residence and
euthanize a dog?

Dr. McFarland from White's just came to our house two weeks ago to help our beautiful girl go. It was almost 15 years to the day that she had come out to let our cat go while our new puppy watched and grieved with us. I know a friend who used a mobile vet, who she highly recommends too. If you would like I can get her name.

The doctors at SB Pet Hospital will do it. They came to my home in December and put down my 14 year old lab. Very sweet. They spent time with her petting her and talking to her for a while before they did it, then wrapped her up in a quilt and took her body. They handled me well too while I sobbed uncontrollably.

I don't mean to be insensitive, but, don't you have a Veterinarian that you have been taking your dog to for regular check-ups and vaccinations? And, when you do have it done, please, stay there with your dog, do not leave him or her alone to go to doggie heaven alone without your hand on him and reassuring him that he has been your best friend his entire life. I am appalled when people tell me they had to "leave the room" when they had their pet put down because, they couldn't handle being in there when their beloved pet passed. Pets have more feelings than anyone will every know. And, if you have another dog or cat at home, make sure to comfort that pet for days to come because that dog will also be feeling very sad and lonely that his partner/playmate is gone.

Try St. Francis Pet Clinic. Dr. Faoro came to our house to euthanize our wonderful cat Smokey when the time came. It made it much easier on us.

Dr. Margie Mason came to our home on a Friday night from Carpinteria to Santa Barbara, immediately after our phone call. Our beloved Lab was so weak and suffering it was an immediate need, and Dr. Mason came here right away despite the late hour. Her charges are fair.

Having a pet put down at home is so comforting for pet and person. The trauma of getting into car, out of car and into vet. Wish I could have had that option. Many vets are more sensitive to that kind of Hospice thinking now. Good luck.

Wish I hadn't read this because I feel so emotional now, but I'm glad to know that so many compassionate veterinarians exist in our town. I have two animals that are now 15 years old, and to know that if there is ever a need for this, I can stay home with them where they can be comforted in their last minutes at home. Ok, now where are those Kleenex!

I think most vets will come to your home. They just need time to fit it into their schedules. We ended up taking our dog to the vet's office because we have other dogs and couldn't bear the thought of doing it at home. Our dog had no fear of the vet's office and felt loved there, so it wasn't an issue for him. We also had Laura Stinchfield, a pet psychic in Ojai, come to our home that same morning. Through her we were able to speak with our dog and say our good-byes (and let the other dogs understand what was happening) and I found immense peace from that. I highly recommend her when having to go through this difficult time.

Thanks for posting this. I've got two 15 year old cats. Going to the vet is such trauma for them, they HATE it. I know the dreaded time will come when I'll have to say goodbye, but I'd much prefer it to be here at home.

the vets at S.B. Pet Hospital on the Mesa were wonderful when they euthanized our old dog. They took time to talk to us about her...sat quietly and petted her while we told them about her life..surrounded by candles.....it was beautiful

I highly recommend Dr. Haskell at Adobe. He is such a kind and sensitive human being. He came to my home with a loving gentle assistant. My beloved Lab boy went to the rainbow bridge, from his home, on his bed surrounded by love. I will never bring an animal in to an office again, and then drive home sobbing. This felt it was as it should be and he wasn't afraid just drinking in the love surrounding him. It stills brings tears just remembering how much I loved him.

To this day, putting my dog down was the hardest moment of my life. Part of me died when he did. White's Pet Hospital is the best. Call them.

Dr. Casaus (sp.?) at White's did this for us and our old cat Blueyes in 2006, on a Sunday. It is very hard, but is the best of the worst. The staff even sent a sympathy card a few days after.

White's euthanized my 20 year old cat in my home 2 years ago. What a relief. The cat was spared the trauma of the vet's office and I could grieve in peace. They sent me a card as well. White's is a class act.

OP here....thank you all for your heart felt responses. Appreciate it so much. I'm getting the info for a friend, she has a list now. I had my dog put down last Oct. He always saw Sherry Trujillo DMV, she gave so much comfort to both of us.

166130 -- Ditto. Our Sandy was the best dog I've ever known, and sending her off was the hardest thing I've ever done. It's been 8 years and I still cry. I wish we had known that a vet could have come to the house; the stark vet's room and unfamiliar dog bed were an awful setting in which to say goodbye.

If you have a relationship with a vet, ask them. I know several people who have had Dr. Beverly Holmes from La Cumbre Animal Hospital come to their homes. You will want to consider if you can bury them at home or have them cremated, you can even get the ashes back if you wish. It can be much less stressful for both human and pet.

COMMENT 166012P - 2011-04-21 09:04 AM - Great viewpoint and great advice. Two weeks ago I had to let go of my baby girl, my feline daughter, Tally, who turned 20 years old the day before, June 15. She was a Tuxedo kitty with the white bib on her chest in the shape of a heart. I have many pics of her. I'll try to find one. I sincerely feel that I owed her whatever comfort my presense provided. I, too, think it's awful when pet owners don't feel some obligation to an animal that showed them unconditional love and loyalty. "Bless the beasts and the children, For in this world, they have no say....."
