Aloe
updated: Apr 18, 2011, 10:14 AM
After my first beach day of the year on Saturday, I
recieved the first initial sunburn of the year. I'm curious
where I can get some raw aloe in town (other than
someone's front yard) that would be more effective than
the gel stuff. Any suggestions?

You will smell like a complete turd if you do. Do a favor for those around you and use the gel. If you have to, the Aloe in my yard is blooming now, so look for the small spikey agave looking plant with orange flowers around town. The stuff is everywhere.

There are lots of Aloes -- the one you want is Aloe Vera. The herb lady at the Saturday Farmers Market can sell you a plant....

There's a company out of Westlake called "Pure Necessities" that sells it in a pump bottle or in a tub. I have the pump bottle and couldn't live without it! It's great on chapped baby faces, wind burn, sun burn anything. Just clear aloe but NOT stinky. I'm not sure where they sell it out here but it's worth googling.

Buy a little plant at the Farmer's Market or local nursery. They grow really well and we always use them for first aid- sunburns, cooking burns, etc.. Slice a leaf in half legnthwiese and rub directly on skin. I have not noticed a bad smell at all, and I am super smell sensitive...

Yes, Aloe Vera is the one you want (there are many varieties). Easy to grow in semi-shade and always have on hand for any burns. Check Farmers Market as suggested or go to a nursery. Really is better than anything I've found in a bottle, quicker.

Don't just go and pick some, there are many species of aloe and the one you need is Aloe vera. Try Island Seed and Feed, Terra Sol, La Sumida, etc for a plant. They grow great in pots, give it partial shade and moderate water, and you'll be set. Slice off the thorns before splitting the leaf and rubbing it on you. I've never noticed a bad smell, however, it will stain your clothes.

Responsible responses! Woohoo! Yes, spend a little $$$ at the farmer's market of a local nursery, for a small Aloe vera plant. Keep it in a pot, or plant in a sunny well-drained spot in your garden. You need very little for the occasional burn; just slice a leaf and wipe the sap onto your burn. You'll have relief at your fingertips for as long as you keep your new plant friend healthy.

You might also try a little known burn remedy I heard about: green bean broth. Sounds weird, but get a can of green beans (or boil some fresh beans), drain the liquid and use it to swab the burn area. Supposed to be genius!

After throat surgery I have a lesion on my vocal chords / esophagus. Now my singing is affected. I buy the Trader Joes' 8$ bottle to drink but I was wondering if there are any recommendations for making my own drinkable tonic??? Thanks.
