Does anyone know of a restaurant in Santa Barbara that serves Veal Oscar so I can take my husband there for his birthday?

I would rethink the veal. The veal calf industry is one of the most reprehensible of all the kinds of intensive animal agriculture. Veal calves are a by-product of the dairy industry; they are "manufactured" by "milk machines" - dairy cows. Female calves are raised to be dairy cows: They are confined and fed synthetic hormones to increase growth and production and antibiotics to keep them alive in their unhealthy, unnatural environments. They are artificially inseminated and, after giving birth, are milked for several years until their production levels drop, then they are slaughtered.

To SBARTS: So, it would follow that the Dairy Industry is mighty suspect of causing great harm to living things from what you have stated. In order for a dairy cow to produce milk, the female must have a calf. The cycle begins...

I know it's difficult not to insert opinion, but on threads like this when there's a specific question, it's really not the place. Telling somebody they shouldn't be buying (insert product here) or in this case, arguing that they should "rethink" what they are searching for, is placing judgments on the searcher. That's not what they're coming here for. To the OP, the only place I've seen Veal Oscar close to SB was at a bistro in Simi Valley called Olivios. If you aren't able to find it locally, it may be worth the drive.

I googled it, but couldn't find a restaurant in Santa Barbara. Simi Valley has one though. I don't know anything about them, and it is about 70 miles from Goleta. Olivios Bistro, 1230 Madera Road,Simi Valley, Ca 93065, Phone: 805-581-9883 Email:Benvenuto@oliviosbistro.com Good luck and ignore those folks who would rather judge than answer a simple question.

164615: Excellent point. A person asks a question, they aren't asking to be challenged on morals. Perhaps a better approach would have been for that person to answer the question if they could, and encourage the OP to ask from where the veal is sourced. Apparently, humanely raised veal nowadays is actually superior meat.

Amen, @164619P & @164622P. Last time I asked for a referral on something I thought was pretty simple, I got flamed. As much as I love Edhat, I will never ask for a referral again.

I just looked up the recipe -- sounds expensive, but yummy. If there are no local restaurants, perhaps you can have a local chef (private or restaurant) make it for you on request? The recipe isn't hard, and any competent chef should be able to make it well -- the trick is in getting good ingredients. If you arrange it beforehand, I'm sure you can get what you want in time for his birthday.

VEAL? Wow, I really thought most people understood the absolute cruelty of raising a veal calf. It does not border on torture, it IS torture. Everyone should exercise just a little consciousness in most of what they do. Raising an animal for food, aka eating just a steak or a burger, is a far cry from condoning the absolute prolonged torture of an animal for your personal pleasure.

I bet one of the high-end (no pun intended) Italian restaurants would be happy do it for you upon request. I'd try Emilos first.

Welcome to Santa Barbara where you are what you preach. Now, can anyone recommend a good source of 100W incandescent lightbulbs? I prefer a store that also provides nice, thick single use plastic bags.

627P and 619P make excellent points. There ARE humanely raised veal calves, not kept in the dark cramped quarters that the anti veal people are thinking about. Of course not all are raised humanely, but that's true with all animals that provide us with food in one form or another. I'm sure some of the negative posters here would love for all of us to be vegetarians, but there is cruelty in so many ways in this world, let's just pick our battles or else we should each live alone by ourselves in caves to avoid casting judgment. Vegetarians are not above reproach in other ways, I'm sure.

I am sorry to go off topic here, but I must. I was meat eater for 54 years. I had stacks of rib eyes in my freezer. But one day something happened, I just thought this is weird. Eating other mammals it can't be right. I still eat fish, crabs, lobsters, clams, just about all sea food. But no more mammals. People in other countries eat dog steak, fried cats, in Japan they eat horses. How many of you would eat a cat, a horse, or a dog. I know its just our culture. But I am done with mammals. Sorry, Brays in Goleta used to have the best veal. But they are long gone.

52P...I would eat dog, cat, horse or whatever was prepared well. As far as Veal, like many things in this town, if you want to do it right, without raised eyebrows of the nanny crowd, just buy the meat from a local rancher and make it yourself. BTW, pounded turkey cutlets or even pork loin is a barely noticeable substitute for veal in many dishes.

Can't believe you could swallow it, knowing the agony you've caused a young calf. Yikes. It is totally barbarian.

Actually restaurants all over town prepare veal in a variety of ways. I agree with Becky that you can ask any number of local chefs to prepare this for your husband. Dont be put off by all the preaching here, some just cant help themselves, and others have no one left that will listen to them so they preach here. No big deal, its a big community. By the looks of the most successful restaurants in town year after year, I would say that the anti-meat crowd is a very, very, very small minority here, but very loud. :)

I wonder how people would respond if someone were to ask for a source, store? online? for a cheap gun so as to commit suicide? I would guess that quite a few, including some of those opposed to those writing about the cruelty of killing the calves for veal, would attempt to dissuade. I appreciate the efforts to point out what is involved with what we eat. Seedlady makes a good point. And thanks, SB ARTS for pointing out the issue.

Whoa! 694. Dogs and cats are our loving companions. Horses too, and they helped us fight our wars and farm our fields and establish the United States of America. Imagine what early transportation would have beern without them. Eat chicken, fish and veggies and be happy.

Best Italian restaurant is not in town... it's in Santa Ynez - Grappolo's - next to the Maverick Saloon. they do veal dishes like no one else - and you may be able to call the owner/chef Leonardo to see if he would make it special for your special guy.
