Earth Day ranks right up there with Summer Solstice and Fiesta as one of Santa Barbara's most
popular local celebrations, and the family-friendly festival will take place this weekend at Alameda Park.
If you happen to be visiting Santa Barbara during Earth Day, you should definitely check it
out. Each year, the festival changes slightly; but there is always good food, cool eco-friendly stuff to buy, games and
activities for kids, and much more. See some photos from last year's event at the end of the story.
Here are some highlights expected today and tomorrow. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Alameda Park, located between Anacapa and Santa Barbara Streets and cross
streets of Micheltorena and Sola.
Get there on foot, by bus, or on a bike. Traveling green makes the world a better place, and people
and pedal power, as well as mass transit via MTD, is a big part of the Earth Day message. You can get a free bike
checkup and bike valet parking on site at the event. Details here. There are also numerous bike-oriented exhibitors who will be part of several hundred
booths at the festival. For bus route info, visit the MTD site
Live entertainment. Jazz, dance, comedy, yoga, rock, and much more are all part of the Earth Day main
stage lineup. Local acts Sprout, The Goodland, Santa Barbara Dance Alliance and Wetlands are among the featured acts.
See the full lineup: here For kids, there's a whole
separate lineup of music and dance. A band called the Wee Bee Jammies sounds pretty cute. Schedule: found here There's also storytelling and interactive
music classes for the little ones.
Visit Edhat. The dedicated staff will be on hand at the Earth Day event, selling cool Edhat t-shirts,
reusable grocery bags, and paid subscriptions. Stop by to ask us questions about the website, get information about
advertising, or tell us what you think of our efforts. Or, just come by and say hi! We love meeting our readers, and
hearing your feedback in person.
Celebrate local environmentalism. Santa Barbara proudly claims itself to be home to the environmental
movement. The oil spill off our coast in 1969 is a flash point for locals who have worked to protect and preserve the
planet for over 40 years. The first Earth Day was celebrated here in 1970. A new ambitious goal, an effort to be "Fossil
Free by '33" will require the participation of all of us to achieve. Get more information about the project at the
Community Environmental Council's website
