Chile Colorado Burrito
updated: Apr 12, 2011, 8:43 PM
I'm hungry. Where I live it's pretty much Mexican fare. Outside of the best Chinese restaurant in town. But what i want isn't here. Can't find it anymore. I was dreaming of a childhood favorite. Chile Colorado burrito. At 10 in San Bernardino in 1970 Dad would take me places I could always get one. Around 1975 when Carlos and Leslie opened Carlitos you could get the best chile Colorado burrito ever made. After I left town in 1986 I've never found a chile Colorado burrito since. Does anyone still make one? If so where? Sorry for the whining, but I got a hankering.

Sorry, can't help but only sympathize. My hankering is for a chile verde burrito, the kind La Tolteca used to make. Just plain chile verde, not filled up with a ton of rice and beans like the monster burritos everyone serves now. And also I really miss Jennie Luera's cheese enchiladas at the old La Paloma - hand ground red chile (half California, half New Mexico). There's a place in Albuquerque that serves something similar, but nowhere around here any more. And her capirotada bread pudding with cashews and cheese -- ah, the good old days!

Lito's on Haley....they have both of those, and will put whatever you want in your burrito, and it's delicious!

Check out Del Pueblo Cafe, in the Magnolia Shopping Center, in Noleta. They have a chile colorado burrito on their menu. DPC is our favorite area Mexican restaurant.

Sorry - tried to post the recipe, but the website said it was too big. I'll be happy to get it to you another way if you can suggest one.

I'm pretty sure Rudy's on upper State has the CCB - for a while they had a special burrito with Chile Colorado and Chile Verde. Not sure about the other Rudy's locations.

Isnt that pork with some type of red sauce? I am sure you can google a good recipe! However I am also sure El Sitio or Los Tarascos do.

El rincon bohemio? I'm sure I have the spelling wrong but they are over near state street/154 at the el mercado. I'm pretty sure they have one and their food is pretty good.

I'm partial to the Chile Colorado at Altamirano's on Milpas. You can order a burrito or a plate with rice and beans and scoop up the chili with bits of tortilla. Yum!

OP here. Thanks all for the recommendations. Lito's is close by. I'll be off in a few minutes. Still not what I remember. Just chile Colorado in the burrito but a craving is a craving. >>>Nooz, now that I think about it, yes pork. Funny given my dad was orthodox, pork is trayfe. He still always let me get it. Thanks MY. Altamirano's is within walking distance. I will try them tommorow!
