Summer Job Search
updated: Apr 06, 2011, 6:08 AM
It sounds like students are having a hard time finding summer jobs this year. Any tips for places that might be hiring young workers?

I've heard that message rumbling through the S.Y. Valley just the past week. Seems many parents of school aged kids are snapping up the jobs teens used to rely upon in summer months - delivery for everything, back of house at restaurants, motels, theaters, fast food in Buellton, etc. Teens are going to have to be creative & perhaps create new jobs for themselves that are successful & provide a service that nobody else does.

Go to Camino Real Marketplace in Goleta and just ask for applications from the different businesses (even if there isn't a help wanted sign there is usually a high turnover rate, especially at the restaurants). Not sure how craigslist jobs are but I always looked through the newspress classifieds too.

I know volunteering isn't a way to make money, but it IS a great way to get experience to put on a resume and it can lead to paying jobs. If students are unable to get a summer job, they should look into volunteering somewhere that interests them.

I agree with 161548...Interning/Volunteering...that is the way to prove yourself, gain knowledge, experience, and find a trade that works for the individual. I keep telling my nieces and nephews that!

Depending on how young these "youngsters" are - there's wonderful job resources at both UCSB and SBCC available to students. There's also a number of online-based opportunities. In years past, Google used to have "quality raters" that went through and applied human intelligence to improving Google's search results. While that program ended, a creative person can find ample work online. Similarly, Amazon has "Mechanical Turk" - a system where you can farm out your time and experience to aide in computing tasks. Things computers are bad at (like, object recognition) people can do quickly. Each task may take just a few seconds and pay a few cents, but if you're quick and do good work, you can do as well as any entry-level job. I can't post the link, but a quick search for "Mechanical Turk" yields a description of the program and how you sign up to be a worker.

I would stay away from the "Mechanical Turk" In looking at this, it's just slave labor. Being paid a cent to do a task which may take 5 minutes is absolutely ridiculous.

My daughter has been looking for a job for months now. She's at a disadvantage because she has a slight learning disability that requires more time for her to learn a job. Also her stature is very small causing her to look much younger that her 20 something age. Its very disheartening how few companies in Santa Barbara will take the time to hire and work with mildly disabled people. Makes me sad.

The City of Santa Barbara just sent me a job announcement...this Saturday, they are testing for Beach Lifeguard, Jr. Lifeguard instructor and JG aides. Test is at 9:00 a.m., East Beach Bathouse. Must be 16 years of age on May 1, 2011. Pays $11-13 per hour.

I think kids need to be willing to get a job anywhere. Try 7-11 or a fast food place. They always need help. They may only make minimum wage, but it is better than nothing.

sometimes it's all about timing. jobs tend to open up when college kids head home for the summer or college freshmen head off for school. my daughter (senior in HS) got a restaurant job last summer and has held on to it since. Volunteering is excellent idea, especially for those planning to apply to college... a HUGE plus.
