We're moving, and have boxes of books we'd like to donate - cookbooks, picture books, children's chapter books, adult non-fiction, etc. Any ideas on what to do with all these books? It kills me to have to part with them, but the new place just isn't big enough for a library!

Planned Parenthood book sale. There's a trailer (I can't remember exactly where), where you can drop them off.

Our school library donated books to The Village. It's a 70-unit affordable housing complex on the west side of Santa Barbara. They have a community center with a library and they were very grateful for the books. You can email them at: info@TheTurnerFoundation. com

In addition to Planned Parenthood, you can donate the children's books to schools like Adams that really need the help. The adult books can also be donated to your favorite library branch, which will either use them or sell to fund programs.

Sometimes the SBPL accepts used books for their periodic fund raising sales. God knows, they need the help.

My mother was a cookbook collector and had over 500 when she died. We donated most of them to the downtown Los Angeles public library -- they have one of the largest culinary book collections in the country. They were very happy to take the donation.

I concur on donating to the librarys. The kids books can also be donated to places like Girls, Inc or other kids programs/schools.

Thanks for the information. We're moving too, and some of these books aren't making the trip. Over the last year we've given several dozen boxes to the SB library. Maybe I'll give our next batch to one of the above charities.

The Assistance League is my charity of choice, you can drop off boxes of stuff any time in front of their door, they are only open a few hours a week. They price things to MOVE, everything is very cheap and the staff is all volunteer and the money collected goes to very good causes. They take any books except text books.

550: Re magazines, in all honesty, no one wants them. If current, it's possible a senior center or something like that might take them, but, trust me (in the book business for many years), if it's bundles of old issues and stuff like that, just recycle them. Even seemingly "old" or "historic" things, with a few rare exceptions, are of no value.

Teachers also like books for their classrooms and to use as rewards for students. Perhaps you can pick a time in the evening or on a Saturday when you can invite teachers to come and look through your books.

Bring them to your local public library -- what they don't catalog and keep for the library they can sell to generate $$ for new books. The libraries need our help. ( You can also just write a check.)
