Paper Wasp Removal
updated: Apr 03, 2011, 9:00 AM
Does anyone have any suggestions, a company or product for Paper Wasp
removal? It seems they've come out in force over here in Santa Ynez with the
recent heat we've been having. I have several nests in my S tile roof, they hang
out
by my front door in the shade. Scares the wife and small children! Any input
appreciated!

Can't you just blast the nest with a spray nozzle set to 'annihilate'? So far that works for me.

No kidding! Why pay for removal. Blast with the hose does the trick every time. Worst case is you have to hose off the side of the place, sidewalk & maybe clean a window or two. But, hey! It's $ $

Up in SYV we use Western. They've done the same up on our roof.

When I was a kid we put the nest in a huge can with screen across the top and took it to school. Not suggested for the 2010s, I daresay. And yes, they got loose.

Appreciate the fact that the wasps are eating many insects and are beneficial. Paper wasps usually attach their nests to out of the way places, off the ground. I have many of them attached to my roof overhang on a shady side of my home. I do not have pest problems in my garden and have not used any form of pesticides for over 18 years. I have never been stung and neither have my children or grandchildren.

If your household's concern is the risk of being stung, the fact that paper wasps are not aggressive when their nests are unmolested may allow coexistence. If not, paper wasps are least active when it is coldest, so dawn is the safest time of day to knock the nests down. Those extendable brushes for removing cobwebs work well for this. This information is from an exterminator I hired 5 years ago to deal with 7 nests under my eaves.

Thanks for the responses here. I realize that these wasp's are good and have tried to leave them be. Over the past 3 years they have escalated from one to 3 nests on the sides of my home where there are no doors, to realistically, over 20 nests in my roof under the S tiles. They are 4 nests in a 20' run above my entry alone. So, after trying to be a 'nice guy' (I garden organically and enjoy their help) coexisting with them, it's becoming a problem as on hot days, there will be 40 or 50 of them swarming around my entry door in the shade. I've also done the hose method, sprayed the wasp killer..it works to an extent but there are so many I can either buy a hazmat suit or pay an exterminator...lol.
