Beach Clean-Up
updated: Apr 01, 2011, 11:00 AM
The recent beaching of a tugboat on East Beach resulted in the dismantling and
removal of the boat. However; the beach is still littered with small remnants,
and will continue to be so for a while.
Is there any agency that organizes volunteer beach clean-ups? I'd be happy to
show up and do my share in the pick-up.

I agree! I was bummed not to have a trash bag when I walked along that beach yesterday. I observed one person picking up trash in an orange vest, but there is a TON of garbage on all of our beaches right now due to the storms. Mission creek looks pretty bad too.

I do not have much time for picking up trash but I keep a bag and one of those trigger tools to pick up trash in my mini van. Sometimes taking an extra bag or two for others to use works sometime.

Channelkeeper does once/month regular trash pickups around Mission Creek outflow. Best is to bring a bag with you when you go to the beach....

PS - I saw all the stuff there as Marborg was taking apart the tug --- I thought that they would also pick up the trash that inevitably resulted from that and washed along the shore. They did not.

Marborg did as good a job as could be expected; under the circumstances. The problem that much of the left over debris is buried in the sand; invisible until it surfaces again with the next tide. Clean-up will go on for quite some time.

Facebook. If it can help organize an overthrow of an authoritarian dictatorship in Egypt, it can help organize a beach cleanup.

357- Some of the debris is now buried, maybe, but the wave line along the beach east of where the tug was was daily littered --- and no one from Marborg made any effort to pick stuff up in all the times I was there. (Admittedly, I, too, did not have a bag --- but also, notably, I wasn't getting paid. I shall bring a bag with me the next time I am there to pick up after Marborg.) ...Uhh, I don't get the Facebook reference. Please explain how a beach cleanup could work? It could be very helpful.

What about channelkeeper????? I thought that their mission was to keep our waters clean? or is it just to make money on testing the waters? and suing when they need more press.

Channelkeeper has regular pickup days at Mission Creek. 585- they are a bunch of volunteers, like you?, like me. They do the best they can but it is not their responsibility to pick up the mess Marborg left behind.
