I am in need of finding a free or lost-cost medication program in Santa Barbara. Does
anyone have any ideas where to start? I have looked online & many of those
programs are on hiatus or have ended. Thanks for your ideas!

Costco Pharmacy is probably the best deal you'll find.

thanks, 17410. @LIZTISH340, it sounds more like a "need" than a "want" if someone is posting about medication on this website. are you taking this moment to express a unifying universal desire or just to be debbie downer? it seems that edhat is designed to promote community and give us ways help take care of each other. let's try to do that.

Ralphs offers many generic medications at $4 per refill. The list is on their site.

You already all low-cost health services with the Santa Barbara Community Neighborhood health clinics, which offer low-cost sliding scale medical services and have been available for decades. I can't understand why so many people keep complaining about not getting enough free handouts in this town when so many have been long available for them in this very generous community. Try the Westside Neighborhood Clinic on West Micheltorena near San Andres to learn more about these long operating low-cost health clinics in this town.

No, I wasn't trying to be a debbie downer. My daughter has rheumatoid arthritis and is on chemo. The costs of her many medications are staggering. I am very sympathetic to anyone who has the same problem.

A couple seeds, some dirt and water and you should be all set with the safest and most effective medication on the market! Legalize it!

454 - pot is not safe, it is not medication, and it is not effective. It is an intoxicant however. Pot can make you believe anything you want however, when using this intoxicant.

454: I wasn't aware pot cures cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc, etc. I believe it has it's place medically, but suggesting it's a cure-all or that 'anyone needing meds can just take that' is dumb. And not helping the cause. Instead of taking every advantage to push it, bring it into conversations where it fits, and do so in a manner to not alienate the opposing team (not that it'll change their minds, but annoying them isn't helping!).

National Cancer Institute The potential benefits of medicinal Cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care provider may recommend medicinal Cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible direct antitumor effect. Cannabinoids are a group of terpenophenolic compounds found in Cannabis species (Cannabis sativa L. and Cannabis indica Lam.). This summary will review the role of Cannabis and the cannabinoids in the treatment of people with cancer and disease-related or treatment-related side effects. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/cam/cannabis/healthprofessional/page2

Pot will not "cure" disease. It reduces stress and promotes a feeling of well being which in turn helps the body and mind cope.

my apologies, @LIZTISH340. i am frustrated by the idea that if someone asks for guidance, people assume they are only looking for a hand-out and i took your comment incorrectly. all the best to your daughter and your family. i hope that you also find a way to care for her in this desperate economy.

And that medication you take is a cure all? Medication may help symptoms you are experiencing, however the sideeffects are sometimes, if not always worse.

Here is the county's discount program from all SB county residents even if they have insurance. Not sure how much it will save you but it is easy and worth a try. http://www.coast2coastrx.com/santabarbaraca/ You can also try asking the drug companies if they have programs you can apply to for assistance (at least that's what their commercials say).

thank you darceface! I just got off the phone with blue shield. I pay $200 a month for grandson's health ins. They say I need to pay a $500 co pay and then $35 for each prescrip. He needs two. They will only allow one month's prescrip. This is on top of his mom's costs AND mine. How do people manage?

MediCal and SCHIP already covers children's medical care in California for low-income and those above low-income. There is plenty of taxpayer funded medical assistance available for children in this state.

He isn't a child so we have to pay for ins. Mom and he can't work due to med reasons. I am sole provider. We are the people in the middle. Chemo company has been great, but doesn't cover everything. This is my last post on the subject. Plenty of people in the same position, sad!

great suggestions! @liz.... sometimes you can get the doctor to help you out. for example, if the meds are pills or liquid, where you have to measure it, the doc may decide your grandson would benefit from being prescribed double what he is prescribed now. and leave it up to you to decide when he needs the double-sized doses, which is never. that gets you a 2-month supply. my doctor used to do that for me... just ask. also, they may have "samples" available at the doc's office. my doctor used to give me an entire month's supply of "samples." good luck to you... what a stressful thing to deal with on top of the medical condition itself. as for available state funds, we have an interesting challenge in sb: "low-income" is defined statewide for statewide programs. here, it is not uncommon to make too much money to qualify for aid while living with 2 other families in order to afford rent. i'm not talking about 2 families in a 6,000 square foot home; look how much it costs to rent even a 2bd apartment.... yay, happy hour!

Perhaps Americans would not require as many medications if they were not brainwashed into "needing" so many medications. Has it ever occurred to anyone that quite possibly the pharmaceutical companies and doctors in bed with them, WANT you to be sick?....chronically sick. There's no profit in "health". The ailments listed above, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and even Cancer, can be averted with a healthy body weight, exercise and a healthy diet. I saw it in my own Mother who developed adult onset type II diabetes. She was 3X daily insulin dependent. As soon as she came down to a healthy weight....diabetes, GONE.

Contact the individual companies if you have certain high cost drugs. Many have patient assistance programs. Some are based on need and others are not. It takes some leg work but will definitely help to reduce the cost of pricy medications with or without insurance.

758, they refuse it because it doesn't have a meaningless FDA stamp of approval and no big drug company is making money off it. If it had that, people would line up for it, all moral judgements aside. Of course, it would still be just as dangerous for some people to use (prob more so since they would have added a bunch of awful stuff to it and declared it safe.) This is how stupid people are and how they operate. They need someone else to tell them what they should do. Better yet, they LOVE to tell other people what to do. There you have it, in a nutshell.
