I'd chat with the folks at Terra Sol on Patterson. The selection is good and the knowledge runs deep.

Dear 874, 7 Day Nursery is not that expensive, but not the least expensive in town either. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!! You get expert service, great stuff that doesn't die, and everything that you need to have an incredible garden. I have shopped there for years and have never been disappointed. The staff are awesome, knowledgeable and friendly. Sure you can go to Home Depot or some other chain, but you won't get the service or the satisfaction of knowing that you're supporting a LOCAL SB BUSINESS that has endured the recession!!! YAY 7 DAY!!!!

Yes, the Costco pygmy date palms are great and at a price hard to beat. I got a "bunch" (usually in clusters of 3) a couple of years ago. Very healthy.

Deigaard is good for quality and non-run-of-the-mill palms. Any Phoenix (such as the previously suggested "pygmy date" has spines, in case that matters to you. Even these can reach relatively large size. You might want to go down to the SB Courthouse and view the beautiful collection of palms growing there. Then you will have an idea of what grows in our climate. Often what you can purchase at garden centers won't survive here. (I remember the coconuts at Trader Joe's - so sad - they are tropical and will die a miserable death with our weather.) I like the Chamaedorea genus for the feathery, tropical look and lack of spines. Most of these clump and many are fine in our climate (but not all - so do your research).
