This is the dedicated staff of edhat.com reporting from the Field of Drains, location of Wednesday's March Edness Where Is It (WII) picture. You know where we're talking about. The Field of Drains was the Caltrans overkill project in 2009, designed to widen and add drainage to Foothill Road between Cheltenham and Tye Roads. Fifty-two drains were installed on a 1/4 mile section of road.
One of the reasons for the drain-work was to improve access for fire trucks. Unfortunately, construction was in full swing during the Jesusita Fire and emergency vehicles speeding from flare-up to flare-up had to navigate a single torn-up lane on this stretch of road.
One reason that the drain extravaganza was not extended all the way to Mission Canyon Road was that there was an historic culvert along the south side of the road. And over that channel of pre-21st century drainage, there is a small stone bridge. The dedicated staff believes that this bridge is used by residents to collect their mail.
There is a lot more to the historic bridge the crosses the chasm between old drainage and new. Instead of making it up, we will wait for comments from our favorite historians, who live nearby and always graciously share with all.
