OP here. Thank you to those who gave recommendations. I really appreciate it. To the others who have decided to make sport of my request, don't worry, this will be my last request for referrals from Edhat.

Don't let one stupid person dissuade you from asking for advice or referrals.

Cathy Lauritson at Bellezza Vita Spa in Summerland does the very best acrylics in town 969-7300. You want to go to a person you can trust.

I'm not being ornery or argumentative, I'm being serious. I had a nail fungus once from acrylic nails that took a year to get rid of. I will never get acrylic nails again. Not worth the hassle. If someone would have warned me I wouldn't have listened but FWIW I thought I'd put in my 2 cents.

@Shoreline, that's a fair thing to bring up and isn't a criticism of what I was asking for. In my case, I've had acrylics for years without problems. I had to remove them when I became ill and couldn't go out for fills. It's been over a year and I'm better now and want to get them again, but the woman I used to go to moved out of town.

Kims Nails at the turnpike center next to Vons and cvs. Her salon is new, but she has been in town for almost 20 years. She is honest, and her employees are top notch. I have had my nails done for more than 20 years, and she is the best in town. She will also give you a first time discount, and takes axxess. Good luck

Don't do it. I had them for years, but it's dangerous, and it takes forever for your nails to be normal again. Not a good thing.

Rainbow Nails on Calle de Laurales (between State and De La Vina a few stores up from Petrini's). My mom has had acrylic nails for years and has tried many places in town. She was very happy when she discovered Rainbow Nails since they have done one of the best jobs. I love going there for the regular manicure and spa pedicure. It is owned by a very nice young couple and their relatives also work there to help out.

Eddiekd, I hope you don't spend money on anything that makes you happy. I don't have any advice (only ever had acrylics twice - can't stand them - they feel so thick, I can't get used to them!), but I just wanted to chime in with 090P: I like reading the referrals, so please don't let people who feel the need to be jerks change your behavior. They'll always be there - just ignore them. :)

I like the "Best Nail by Linda" salon at 3008 State Street. Linda and her sister do a great job. They also offer a new "shellac polish" that lasts a month and doesn't chip or fade. This might be something you might consider instead of the acrylic nails. Personally, I love it!

Alice's nails in Montecito on Coast Village Rd. I've been going to Alice for years. She's quick and does a fantastic job. Not once have I had any nail fungus, as I had from other places in the past. It looks like you now have alot of good recommendations. Good luck.

Good for you for doing what makes you happy. Head to Toe does a great job. Gel nails are something to be considered...they have less of an arduous application procedure and tend to look more natural. They are also more comfortable (not as thick). They are surprisingly durable too. Hope you find someone who does a fabulous job for you.

Not a look I'd aspire to, but I did get them in the 80s when they were in fashion. I agree that they are dangerous particularly at most of the salons here in town. The hygiene is sub par. If you must, go to Aqua Nails, who at least specialize in safety and cleanliness first. You can get all sorts of fungus and even hep c from dirty nippers and basins.

Gads! There's a nail salon in every block it seems. Talk about dog-eat-dog competition. Ever check out the zillions of strip mall in the greater LA area? Nail Salon City.

Gosh, they are NAILS, not war and peace. Some of our reaction may have involved the notion that the request seemed a tad trivial, especially in light of "recent events." That's all. As fellow human travelers, we wish you well--and are glad you are feeling better after being out of commission. I apologize for my part in hurting your feelings. My bad.

I was a nail tech for 13 years and am very picky about my pink/whites... Diane at Lovely Spa Nails in Goleta is by far the best nail tech I have visited in the area (not to mention the most reasonable).
