Dream Cake
updated: Mar 15, 2011, 8:52 AM
Does anyone know whether there is a bakery in the Santa Barbara area that bakes a Dream Cakes ( chocolate layers with cream and chocolate flakes on top) like Leonard's Bakery on Oahu?

The closest one is Chocolate Heaven at Jeanine's.

I second the recommendation of the Jeanine's cake. Chocolate Heaven is just that -- a calorie crime but a celestial one, giving it special dispensation somehow.

Stick with the chocolate Marquis cake at Renaud's and you will never look back on anything else.

Check with Wayne Kjar Cakes on the Mesa (especially if you liked the old Henning's)

3rd'ing the Jeannine's recommendation. It's not what you're looking for, but fairly close. (I'm actually a bigger fan of the white chocolate strawberry, and I'm a chocolate fanatic. But the chocolate heaven is really delicious. Oh man, if they could only combine that white cream with the chocolate cake, it'd be what you're looking for - I think it's worth asking if they can do it.)

We love the Jeannine's cake. It is a staple of our family's birthday celebrations. I understand Debbie's Delights will also make a great Chocolate-Chocolate cake and will sell to the public (they are mainly wholesale) if reserved a few days in advance.

Anyone know where you can buy a cake with real cream between the layers or is there some law against it?

Pure cream (with flavorings) is not shelf stable without refrigeration. It will melt and get watery, which is why bakeries use a stabilizer. Cornstarch, gelatin, etc. link All you have to do is request real whipped cream be used for a cake you order. But you must prepare to keep it refrigerated. Remember that fat attracts odors, so use a clean refrigerator with no strong-smelling contents, or your cake may taste vaguely of last night's vindaloo.

Hennings cake boutique and Jeanine's make very good cakes and will make them to order at times if you need (not inexpensive however)

190P: No need to get snippy! Obviously no one who has posted is aware of where you can buy the exact cake you are looking for. My earlier suggestion of calling Jeannine's (or any other bakery!) and asking still stands. I'm sure that while it's not listed on a cake menu, it's probably easy enough to request. Ditto on 254: probably not cheap.
