I don't have a suggestion, but I am dying to know also! This poll will determine where I have lunch today. :)

South Coast Deli! Yummm! The Chicken Pesto and the Mark's are my favorite. they occasionally have a "Chicken Piccata" one on special which is great too.

Though SCD paninis are tasty, they aren't authentic. They use Texas toast for bread - not very Italian the last time I checked.

There's lots of "authentic" versions of panini. SCD may not fit into some silly "authentic" category, but it's the best bet in town.

SCD! Actually, all their sandwiches are great!

I'll second C'Dario and add Lazy Acres mmmmmm.

I'd vote C'Dario, if you're looking for cheap then Gino's panini's are only $5 and pretty big.
I'm not a fan of South Coast Deli's panini's like the rest of the people on here. The bread is so thick and then once its been pressed it's too dry.

Does anyone know how the paninis and hot sandwiches are at Metropulos? I have never been there, but they sound delicious.

I make my own 'panini' at south coast and it is wonderful! Jack cheese, mayo and lots of tomato. I tried making this same sandwich at Lazy Acres and though the bread was really good I don't think the guy understood the concept of a grilled cheese since it wasn't pressed.

Has anyone been to Panino? Do they do Paninis?

South Coast Deli. Mark's panini is my favorite - really good if you like a little spice!

Last Xmas a panini pan came with my All-Clad set of pans. I thought I'd never use it, but in fact I use it all the time...it couldn't be easier and they taste great. It's just a simple square non-stick stove top pan with a weighted cast iron press. Nothing fancy required. I use ciabbata or sourdough bread spread with pesto, top with any meat/cheese you like, butter the tops and place in the pan under the press....done! Mmmmm.

Panino doesn't have any hot sandwiches. Metropolis has really good sandwiches, pretty pricey though.

I agree that Via Maestra 42 has the real panino (and if you want a "toast" panino.)

Technically, they're not panini but the grilled cheese sandwiches (made on a real Italian panini press) are superb. link

The best grilled cheese sandwiches can be found at C'est Cheese on Santa Barbara St., just around the corner from the Sojourner.

Metropoulus has a fantastic hot turkey, brie with green panini! But the very, very best I've EVER had is Panolivo (corner of Park & 13th Sts) in Paso Robles. Picture warm FRESH turkey, with brie, their own homemade cranberry, greens and their own homemade panini bread . . . all mouth-watering stuff! We regularly stop there for breakfast, lunch or dinner since its exactly 2 hrs north of SB enroute to points north! Well worth the ride! Tell them Amye (the petite Chinese SB gal) sent you and owner Didier will daudle over you!!!
