Check out ASAP, the county kitty shelter on Overpass Road in Goleta.

PLEASE adopt from any of the local shelters, not from a breeder or pet store. Just Google "adopting kittens santa barbara" and a number of groups will pop up: ResQCats, ASAP, etc.

I saw a cute black kitten on the free section of Craiglist the other day.

A "free" kitten may not be all that free.
It is better to adopt from ASAP or ResQ Cats. These animals are usually vaccinated, spay or neuter is probably included in the adoption fee, and also vaccinations and ID/collars. Some agencies even include leukemia tests, FIV tests, and general health exams.
Free kittens might be harboring a mild or more serious upper respiratory disease, and might have feline diseases that are communicable to other pets. An adoption fee is very reasonable, considering all that you get, and the good work of these groups.

Check out petfinder.com. They list rescue animals up for adoption. Rescues also list pets for adoptions on Craig's list under the Pets section. Adopted both my kitties from rescues (one from Greyfoot in Ventura, and one from Catalyst for Cats in SB.) and cannot say enough good things about these groups. Any kitty you get from them will be healthy, socialized, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and also often microchipped, and at a price that is cheaper than you could get it done yourself at a vet. Good luck finding the perfect kitty for you!

Second Chance Cats, who does adoption outreach at Pet House in Goleta on Saturdays and Sundays, does a great job with their cats and kittens. We got a wonderful kitten from them and I can't say enough good things about the support they gave us afterward when we had questions, etc.

Kitten season is about to start. Cats usually start having kittens late March through October, although last year kitten season seemed to never end. Adopt from a reputable shelter, like ASAP, ResQCats and you will get a great, socialized, altered kitten with all its shots, microchipped, etc, They are usually adoptable at about 2 months of age.

Go to PetHaus in Goleta, on Calle Real, next to Trader Joe's. Second Chance Rescue does kitten and cat adoptions Saturdays and Sundays from 12:30 to 4:00 PM. There is a $100 adoption fee, and that covers their first set of shots. My daughter volunteers there every weekend, and loves to see the kitties get good homes!

Res Q cats is amazing. Jeffne is the sweetest and she has so many lovable kitties for adoption. They are already litter trained and have had their vaccines and are fixed. I adopted two kittens from her two years ago who had special needs, and she did all there follow up shots for me at no charge. She really loves cats (and dogs! and tortises!) and her love of animals really shines through in her operation. Highly recommended!

The shelters are the best place, Get 2 if you can b/c they have company and it is double the fun. I also have a friend who is sheltering 3 or 4 kittens and she is giving them to a good home. Call my home office if you're interested.

When you get your new kitty, care for it wisely. Don't let it wander outside of your property. An indoor, and safe, kitty, is a happy, and alive, kitty.

483P is right. Adopt from the Camarillo facility and you will SAVE A LIFE.

Definitely from any of the local shelters. All of them are great and they all work together to deal with the deluge of kittens when kitten season gets going full steam in the spring. If there's not a lot of young kittens to choose from right now, be patient. Most of them are being born about now and by May, a ton will be available for adoption and you can find anything you could possibly want. Or, consider an adult cat. They are less crazy (the curtain-climbing phase is usually over) and you can tell exactly the personality of the cat you're getting.

Adopt from a shelter. In addition to these adult cats and more which don't have their photos online, they usually have kittens. link

You can also volunteer to get your fill of kitty love and to help these many needy felines.

Resqu cats is the way to go. Jeffyne is an amazing and responsible director. The cats under her care are loved, appreciated, vaccinated and spaded. We have one kitty from Resqu and he is a delight. We regard her so highly that we have even volunteered there.

If you want a kitten, wait until it is kitten season which is coming up soon. You will have more options as there will be plenty at the local shelters.

ASAP ourt on Overpass Road runs a quality operation. What you get with the rescued cat is spay/neuter, a pre-implanted chip in case it gets lost, a free bag of food, health insurance if it gets sick or injured while lost during the first year, and a cat care guide. These are better terms than the best of breeders.

I purchased 2 kittens from 2 Chance Cats, to discover that they were both real sick with worms, fleas, parasites, kitten colds (never heard of that before) took them to 2 different vets. It took about 4-6 months til they were completely well. The smallest one almost did not make it. And I paid $100 for each kitten. When you get a pet from a RESCUE, your not guaranteed that the pet will be in good health.

Resqcats is the best place to adopt because they are really into cats, take good care of them, and they don't send them home with adoptive humans until everything is in order with the kitties and cats...Jeffyne is the most caring, amazing, committed woman that you will ever meet, hands down!!
