Dining with Restrictions
updated: Feb 26, 2011, 10:15 AM
Dear Edda,
I recently attended a dinner party at my sister's house. She sent out e-vites and asked if anyone had dietary restrictions. I am a vegetarian, so of course, I don't eat meat, fish or dairy, but I also don't eat glutens (which means no wheat, rye or barley) or white rice, sugar or caffeine. As a matter of habit, I don't eat any dried fruits processed with sulfur.
However, on the day of her dinner party, I was in the middle of a weeklong cleanse, so I didn't include my dietary restrictions in my response. She knows them, obviously, but sometimes "forgets".
During dinner, several people asked me why I was only drinking green tea, so I told them about my cleanse and about my dietary choices. My sister got angry with me!
When I called her the day after the party, she told me I should not have come, because it was a dinner party, and if I wasn't going to eat, I should not attend a dinner party. She even accused me of making her other guests feel uncomfortable for eating. I tried to point out that perhaps the food she had served was just a little bit unhealthy, and that's why no one had seconds. She called me a Pagan and hung up on me, and now she won't answer my calls. What do you think?
Signed,
Healthy Eater
