I heard from a Southern Calif. Gas employee that air duct cleaning is a scam, that it is not necessary. Those businesses set up an appointment to clean your ducts for a small fee then always find more problems with your system to get more money.

Living up here in the SY Valley, I get our furnace checked yearly for free by The Gas Co. and they say the same thing! I had all of our ducts replaced last year after getting by for 25 years on the originals that had finally pretty much disintegrated. Those companies will always find things, sort of like the pest exterminator services, etc.

It was a while ago (2003) and cost about $550. We used Santa Barbara Steam Cleaning Company. They cleaned our furnace fan, registers, ducts and Chimney. They got alot of gunk out of our ducts (they showed it to us). It made a big difference in the air quality within the house. We were very satisfied. They did not find any problems or try to sell us other services.

Couldn't you do that with a wet/day/blower vacum?

Convincing customers they have a problem in ductwork they can't see is an ideal scam. That said, there is one bacteria that can fester in large air conditioning systems. From cdc.gov/legionella/patient_facts.htm The Legionella bacteria are found naturally in the environment, usually in water. The bacteria grow best in warm water, like the kind found in hot tubs, cooling towers, hot water tanks, large plumbing systems, or parts of the air-conditioning systems of large buildings. They do not seem to grow in car or window air-conditioners." But for most homes, particularly those without A/C, I think that routine servicing of the furnace filter is all that needs done.

I live in a mobile home and frequently get calls to clean our air ducts. So I called the gas co. and they came out for free and checked the furnace, saying no need for air duct cleaning. Here's a very thorough discussion about it by the EPA: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/airduct.html

Had air ducts cleaned as well as furnace etc, negative pressure....stirred up all the garbage and disintegrated lint and gunk, may have removed some but made air quality worse....have since had replacement of entire system and quite satisfied with quality of work and worksmanship all is now well...and 100% better, healthwise, and air quality, heating and air....
