I know BR does them well enough. Not sure about McConnell's. Most other places I could think of are no longer in business.

146480P - So I guess it's been a while since you've been to La Cumbre Plaza? I get root beer floats at McConnells all the time. Ridiculously expensive but good. I would stay away from 31 flavors.

I know you you requested local but if you happen to be near Arroyo Grande Doc Burnstein's is a neat ice cream parlor, with a variety of original flavors and they do make ice cream sodas Here's the link: http://www.docburnsteins.com/

Call - or stop by - Garrett's at State and Mission St and see if they still make sodas. Also, Baskin Robbins on upper State St. when they have their 'soda maker' and selzer working or in stock. Otherwise, just buy selzer water and add it to your ice cream and chocolate (or whatever flavor) and make one yourself. I do this for my granddaughter (and me) just so she knows how good they are.

BR is always out of selzer; maybe if we took our own club soda or selzer in to them and instructed them, they could make one? It's sad that SB is so devoid of the old-fashioned soda parlor ... Doc B's in Arroyo Grande is one of the few such places in our Central Coast area. C'mon, folks: Pasadena has several great little ice cream parlors, what's wrong with SB?

Groovy reminders about Woolworth and El Camino. Both have been gone for decades but it's fun to recall "the good old days".

I Lived in Ellwood but went to SB Christian School (5th grade)on the riviera in 1980. My connction at the bus station was 45 minutes later so I would goto Woolworths and a lady behind the icecream counter would make me either a cream soda or root beer float everyday and I would sit there and do homework and pass the time.I dont remember her very well but I wish I could tell her today how I looked forward to that part of my day more than anything else! Santa Barbara need a real Old Fashioned Ice Cream counter where banana splits and cream soda's Etc dont cost you a zillion dollard.
