A friend will be traveling through town and we want to meet at a restaurant close to the freeway with easy on-off access for lunch. Where's the best spot?

I'd say Enterprise Fish Co - good atmosphere, good food, easy lunch price's, and if traveling southbound you can see it from the 101 before you need to exit.

Itsuki, close to 101 junction with 154. Great Japanese food in a relaxing setting (don't be fooled by the shopping center it's in) two minutes off the freeway.

For 101/154 on and offramp there are several good options. Palapa, Itsuki, Kobachi, Dutch Garden, Rincon Bohemio. For Garden St. exit there's Metopulos. For Castillo there's the Brewhouse.

Depends on your price point and desired ambiance - a fun stop or some serious conversation? I'd certainly second Empress Palace and Palapa for either, and add Stella Mare's if you're after quiet elegance.

424P is my kind of person! The question was not asked with enough specificity. Near where? Which offramp(s)? "The freeway" in M/SB/G is about 20 miles long, so which part do you want to be near? 424, great answer, even if I don't agree with all your recommendations. Beachside was good years ago, now the service is non-existant (too bad since it's such a nice locale). Cody's has just always been gross. I agree FisHouse is really good but for dinner, lunch is just so-so. Commenter- more specific info would be really helpful.

With the exception of perhaps upper Montecito and the upper De la Vina area, there isn't a restaurant in town that isn't easily accessible from the 101.

I often meet friends for lunch at Cody's. It's close to the freeway, the service is excellent, it's fresh and clean, it has a just-right ambiance for a casual lunch (you can hear each other talk), and the food is GREAT! I've never been disappointed after dining there - and I'm picky.

OK. I'm thinking many of the places suggested are cramped and noisy and I probably wouldn't want to stand in a long line (at Fresco, for example, which is otherwise nice) to order food and then hope you can find a table - inside - if it's raining or cold. If you're meeting friends and want to talk and relax, Stella Mare's is the place - very pleasant; it looks out on the bird refuge and isn't that expensive for lunch; is very comfortable and let's not forget that parking is easy there.

If they are coming up from LA, take the Cabrillo / Zoo offramp and see the waterfront views with a choice of restaurants - Fish House, Moby Dick, SB Shellfish, Endless Summer at the Harbor or the Breakwater. They might enjoy a little sightseeing too.

I do agree with El Bajio (if weather is nice, as there's not much room inside) and of course with the Shoals at Cliff House, south of Carpinteria, if you don't mind driving a bit yourself -- also best in nice weather, however. I hope OP will be more specific as to general area suitable or a couple of likely good offramps for location specificity.

For special out of towners, they usually like to be by the beach - wharf area, what makes SB unique: Endless Summer, Brophy Brothers, Longboards, Emilio's, Enterprise Fish Co. Fish House really isn't that good. Last time I had fish & chips there, it looked like an appetizer. Downtown area: Pascucci's,Palazzio,Opal's, Arts & Letters, Petit Valentin, Olio y Limone off La Cumbre ramp: Fresco Cafe, Saigon, Marmalade off San Ysidro: Via Vai, Piatti, Pane e Vino off Olive Mill; Montecito Cafe Don't take them to a burger joint just because of easy access.

If they've never been to SB, Brophy's is no-brainer (Bath/Castillo Exit). Also easy-to-get-to, good, and not-too-crowded: Mission Exit - Daily Grind Garden Exit - Metropolous Coast Village Exit - Panino Summerland/Evans Exit - Summerland Beach Cafe or Stacky's
