What is a good place for breakfast downtown near the Courthouse that's $11 or less, including coffee, excluding tax and gratuity? (Other than McDonalds or maybe Judge for Yoursel.) I'm surprised how expensive breakfast is in SBA.
Also, it'd be curious to know what readers think about posting a restaurant or hotel recommendation on the internet - does it cause the place to become more popular and expensive? Is it hopeless to withhold recommendations because of widespread internet postings? There are two hotels in other cities that I've written several high recommendations and lately their rates have increased significantly, probably due to other factors, but???

Andersen's on State, just up from Figueroa. Their special breakfast is THE BEST in town. They start you with their wonderful danish, then bring eggs and meat, along with potatoes, stewed apples, a yummy ham spread. It is a symphony of flavors. You will impress anyone that is lucky enough to join you!

Andersens is closed right now for remodeling. Esau's on Chapala by Nordstrom is good, but it is expensive. Cajun Kitchen on De La Vina by MIssion street is great too.

Our family loves Cajun Kitchen. Our favorite of them all though is the one on Chapala (their french toast and home fries are amazing), we typically go every weekend. Another favorite that is a little farther from the Courthouse is East Beach Grill (on Cabrillo at the Cabrillo bath house building). They have super yummy pancakes and you are literaly steps from the beach.

Since you are looking for close to the courthouse, try Judge For Yourself on Santa Barbara Street a little up from the courthouse. Or, Our Daily Bread, a little down from the Courthouse also on Santa Barbara Street. Is the snack bar in the basement of the County Admin Building still open?

It's off topic since it's not right downtown, but hop a bus or taxi or get in your hybrid and go to Farmer Boy. It's the real deal.

145549: The snack bar at the County Admin Building has been closed for many years. Judge for Yourself has reliable, if calorific, breakfast food and quasi-legal ambiance. The bacon is especially good. If you want a lo-cal breakfast, try Silvergreen's on Chapala Street (near Cajun Kitchen and Esau's).

Another vote for Judge For Yourself. I'd also suggest Jeannine's which is nearby too, in La Arcada Court. To me, this is the best breakfast in that area. It might run slightly over $11 (I assume you're being reimbursed or something with that odd number) for a bigger breakfast, like an omelette or a full breakfast. Smaller a la carte breakfast with coffee or tea can be had there for under $10.

Savoy (Figueroa between State and Chapala) serves breakfast. Jeaninne's is great, albeit some items are pricey. Not so close to downtown, Derf's is good and cheap for breakfast, probably one of my favorites.

Judge for Yourself! Exhibit A, coffee, tax and 20% tip = $12. (I know, because this is one of my favorite pre-work treats to myself.) Another treat is French Press. Double cappuccino, chocolate croissant and paper = $7.

It's interesting how Edhat readers keep saying Judge for Yourself when the post said EXCEPT for Judge ... I second Silvergreens if you want inexpensive and healthy. (Also Derf's and Garret's but that's not close to the courthouse.) I've found that breakfast has gotten too expensive to go out very often. Many places give way too much food - 3 eggs??? - and then they think they can charge a lot for it. My question would be, "Where can you find a decent breakfast meal (not coffee) at a restaurant for about $5.00?"

Yes! A $5 dollar breakfast! And not just a pastry or muffin. A full breakfast for $5?? Well...downtown it's pretty tough Micky D's of course...and then up the road in San Roque there's Denny's! Denny's still has their "Value Slam"....Two Eggs, Two Pancakes and Two Bacon (or sausage)....for $4.00. Denny's does a better job than a lot of people give them credit for. Doug

Our Daily Bread - many different choices for different budgets. Rudy's (in Paseo Nuevo) breakfast burritos are around $5 and will keep you full for most of the day. I'm sure there are some places on Milpas (which isn't that far away) that have breakfast burritos or other cheap options. Cantwell's is a little father away but they do breakfast too with lots of different options.

Oh, forgot to respond to your 2nd paragraph: it seems like hotel rates are just going back up in general, in my experience...the hospitality industry seems to be starting to believe or pretend that the economic downturn is over, a little too soon, methinks! A place we love in LA has had lower rates for a couple of years now but since Jan. 1, the prices have jumped up again, with no review changes to account for it (they always got great raves, in other words.)
