Asphalt Driveway
updated: Feb 10, 2011, 2:57 PM
I would like to know of folks' experience getting a cracked, bumpy asphalt
driveway redone. Concrete is probably too expensive right now for us, but would
input as to who to contact, other options to consider, etc. Thanks!

Challenge Asphalt has done great work for me, both large and small jobs. If you want to consider pavers, try Custom Hardscapes. Pavers are more expensive but have lots of upside over the long run. It's easy to replace sections if needed and it's a permeable hardscape that reduces site storm water runoff rate and quantity. They look great and come in lots of colors, styles, and patterns.

Has anyone had good luck with pavers on a steep drive? I am wondering if my only option is resurfacing my asphalt. It's in the same condition as the OP, but includes a 20% incline.

Be Carefull..............Very Carefull in your selection. Plan on paying depending on the quality you are looking for. Make sure you do your homework and watch them work and take pictures! To repave correctly the proper preperation means everything and by the time it is obvious that the job you paid dearly for is failing....those asphalters usually are nowhere to be found.Make sure you have a valid copy of their Contractors license along with the written guarentee, ljust in case you need to have it repaired against their contactors bond.Do not pay them more than the customary 15% down payment..... and be sure they have workmans comp insurance on every worker or else you can get caught up in a bogus injury scam months later!! It happens all the time. Be Carefull...Very Carefull

And... once the driveway is done, do NOT let heavy trucks up on it. Years ago my parents had our asphalt driveway redone and then a few months later had some dirt delivered. The truck was in the driveway before my parents could stop it. There was a lovely huge dip and cracks for years where the rear tires had been. Eventually my parents replaced the driveway with concrete and never had problems again.
