Lunch Done Cheap
updated: Feb 04, 2011, 3:41 PM

What are the inexpensive places to get lunch in downtown SB? I work downtown and am looking for a variety of lunch meals at a low cost.

The Whales Tail Deli in LaArcada Court. Lowest prices around; barely more than the Dollar Menu at MickyDees if you choose wisely.

Great quality; changing daily specials, great Soups, quiey friendly atmosphere.

Sakura in Paseo Nuevo Mall - great Japanese bento box specials under $10. Same for well-priced some ala carte items at Alex's Mexican cafe in the same Paseo Nuevo alley way. Saigon In and Out also on 1200 block State Street. Ralphs market on West Carillo has an extensive buffet and deli items. Bagel shop also on 1200 block next to the Granada Theater. Sojourner Cafe has some good cheap and filling basics on East Canon Perdido. Nothing wrong with the Fish Sandwich meal at MacDonalds or good grub at IHOP just a few blocks up State Street.

I think that the OP should chime in and define "inexpensive". Means different things to different people.

To me; "Under $10.00" is NOT inexpensive. Lets try under $5.00.

But; Once we know what price range the OP is looking for it will be easier to make recommendations.

In addition to being ridiculously expensive; most downtown restaurants are also WAY too slow for the typical working person; many of who only have 30 minutes for lunch including transit time to and from the restaurant.

I don't know if you are a big eater or not. I get the sandwiches at South Coast Deli and eat half one day the other the next. Cantwell's has good homemade soup for a good price as does Savoy. The Presido market has fantastic burritos. Again, you can eat half with a piece of fruit and be full.

Take lunch from home- that's the cheapest.---or eat a big breakfast and just get a light snack at lunchtime.

Under $4...Hotdog, slice of pizza, and a coke at Cosco. or Two tacos del carbon, a brc burrito, and a cheese quesadilla at Pollo Loco, not too bad for you either,

Agree, fast and cheap is homemade so bring it along. Get a cute lunch pail and sit in front of the art museum for one of the best shows in town. Or on the benches in La Aracada. Or on the grass at the courthouse.

Henning's Cake Bakery does sandwiches for under $5. Good sandwiches, really. And they're super nice guys.

Get a thick half sandwich or pull tuna salad from the deli at 805 Deli at Carrillo/Santa Barbara St. Many good suggestions are already mentioned.

The Community Kitchen serves in the 800 Block of Cacique for free, but I bet they would not mind a donation. Many people eat there not just the homeless.

Subway, Gino's, McDonald's, Quiznos, Pizza by the Slice at Paseo Nuevo, Panda Express, Chipotle, Habit. If you have an Axxess card, there are BOGO deals from 805 Deli, South Coast Deli, Ultimate Bagel, Three Pickles, I think California Pasta, and maybe some others. The Clipper coupon book that comes in the mail sometimes has one for California Pasta. 805 Deli has a "buy __ sandwiches, __th one is free" punch card. I agree with comments above- eat half the sandwich plus snacks from home, save the other half sandwich for later.

Gino's and Norton's - both are in the 1st block of W. Figueroa over by the Cigar place and Los Arroyos.

I agree with south coast for under $10.

Otherwise, mad dogs has a nice menu for cheap. Where else in town can you get a delicious sausage, a churro, fries, soft serve ice cream, or even a giant pickle whenever you want?

so yummy!
they even have a veggie dog for those that don't eat meat!

You could break down and go to Ralph's deli section or some other chain store that has the same pricing as in other cities (thus appearing cheap here). There are a few places on Milpas with inexpensive food, such as Refugio Taqueria

Well, there goes the myth that everything downtown is so expensive because of greedy landlords. Lots of good value suggestions here, right in our own backyard and right under our noses.

People here need to be kinder about downtown businesses. They work hard and deserve our support. They are not all mega chains and over-priced stuff. There are still plenty of good old fashion value stuff that should keep us all coming back for more.

Mac's fish and chips on state near haley is really good. Also agree with south coast deli 1/2 sandwich, the habit, los arroyos, and plaza deli in la cumbre plaza. SB brewing co has good chicken strips too. Coffee cat has great coffee and croissants. They also advertise soup, crepes and waffles but haven't tried those.

It's not quite downtown, but I occasionally eat a hot dog from the store by the launch ramp at the harbor. Nice break from the "city" and cheap.

I completely agree with many here, "Under $10" is not inexpensive.

Do the math - at an average of $10 per work day that adds up quickly.

None of you have mentioned Three Pickles on Canon Perdido two doors up from the Souj, you can get half a sandwhich for $4.99 loaded, fills me up just fine. I see a lot of construction guys in there for the big sandwhiches. Playa Azul has albondigas soup for $3.

A $10 lunch every work day down town adds up to only $200 a month. Cancel your cell phone and your internet service and you have just given yourself a raise so you can enjoy yourself down town every day, in real time with real people, instead of hiding behind a computer screen alone and in the dark. Your choice but it is not the duty of downtown restaurants to feed you for free while you spend your discretionary cash on your own other choices. No one can complain about downtown lunch prices when it costs only pennies to pack your own.

Some Edhat readers need to give fellow readers a little credit. Do you think this person hasn't thought of bringing a lunch or only eating half a sandwich?
There are good suggestions here for lunches about $5-$6. But I disagree with the Soj being inexpensive. Even their plato barato es caro.

Slightly outside of downtown is Derf's. They give a lot of food and have specials for $6 - $8. Also the salad bar at State and A is quick and reasonable.

C'est Cheese has half sandwiches for $4.50 each -- and they are really "right sized" for my lunch appetite. I love the muffaletta and the turkey/cheese is great too. They use bread from Our Daily Bread, which also has some nice salads and sandwiches for under $10.
