Who grills up the best steak in Santa Barbara? I am interested in high quality meat, prepared to my instructions, and well-executed side dishes.

Sly's in Carp. Prime, dry aged, cut in house steaks cooked to perfection. Well thought out classic menu and cocktails. I usually go for a NY strip, medium rare with green peppercorn sauce. As with any place serving high quality beef, it's not cheap.

The best grilled in Santa Barbara doesn't exist. That only happens at The Hitching Post in Buellton or Casmalia.

It is a very subjective question, but I have eaten at great steak houses all over the place, and Lucky's is the closest to a "real" steak house we have in Santa Barbara. Tee Off really specializes in prime rib, not steak and the meat is not that great. The others are marginal/adequate at best. Honestly, you're better off going to Lazy Acres or Whole Foods and picking out a nice dry-aged ribeye and grilling it yourself. If you want really amazing meat, put in an order with Bryan's Fine Foods in Corte Madera. He has amazing quality beef and will ship overnight!

We really like Jill's Place (632 Santa Barbara Street). My mother-in-law got her steak really rare the way she likes it. (Yuck, I say. But my medium was perfect.) The sides, appetizers, wine, and service are also great there.

Tee-Off is OK if you want an average to above-average prime rib that isn't that expensive. By the way 142572, prime rib IS a steak. Go to The Palms if you want a good time, but not for a good steak. They don't sell good steaks. And you have to be lucky to cook it to your desired doneness. Both Chuck's are slightly better than average. The rest (including Holdren's) are all perfectly acceptable, and perfectly outrageous in price. If you have the scratch and don't mind parting with it, take your choice...you won't be disappointed. Otherwise cook your steak at home. But beware...if you are looking for a prime-grade steak, you will never find one at Von's / Ralphs / Albertsons / Costco. You must go to a specialty store and pay triple what you would at the supermarket.

Cut in LA. Go down there and get a quality meal. Wolfgang Puck does know his steak. Since it's probably not a great idea to eat a lot of it, at least you can get a real one down there once in a while. There's nothing around here that compares. Cut is truly superb for a proper steak with high quality side dishes. http://www.wolfgangpuck.com/restaurants/fine-dining/3789

I think Outback's steaks and prices can't be beat. They are offering a special with a filet mignon and lobster for $26 right now. My wife and I were there this weekend. I started with a cup of French onion soup. The service was very good too.

Drive up to Pismo and McLintock's, but go to the bar and not the restaurant and order their steak pieces with a potato skillet and you get it all at well under half the price, and no wait. Great large, open bar. Good vibes and plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the goodies.

Chuck's Steakhouse is absolutely mediocre - at best. Go there, then go the Hitching Post, just a short run up the 101 or the 154 to 246 then to Buellton. You'll never leave another dime at Chuck's!

Jocko's and Hitching Post are gimmick riddled jokes. Don't go there. Poor quality and lots of it. The real joke is there are no consistently good meat palaces in this town. But then there also are no credible vegetarian or vegan places either. Buy the best cut at a premium butcher and grill your own. This is not rocket science.

Here's a real surprise! We tried Cody's Cafe (on Hollister) for the first time a couple nights ago. Didn't expect much. Their $11.95 strip steak sandwich was abundant, very well cooked, and high quality. Cody's uses Shaloob's beef. One of us had it rare, the other well-done. Both excellent. Comes with nice salad or soup, rolls, and fries. Not the big-time of Sly's or Lucky's, but an inexpensive way to have a very good steak experience.

Glad to hear the recommendation for Crocodile in the Lemon Tree Inn -- that place is a hidden secret for very good food in a surprisingly stylish setting. The chef there is quite brilliant and it would not surprise me he also knows how to handle good beef because of the attention he gives to everything else from his fresh pasta to his excellent coconut cake.

Jill's place. Steak comes with soup, salad, bread and another side. Try the garlic potatoes. Reasonable price. Off the tourist path, so mostly locals. The owner of Jill's is related to the owner of Shalhoub's meat, so they get flavorful beef from there.
