Permeable Paving
updated: Jan 31, 2011, 11:10 AM
We are looking into having our driveway replaced with a permeable paving stone type system and wanted to get suggestions and tips from those in the community who have had experience with this. Contractor suggestions?

Custom Hardscapes did a great job on our difficult driveway. (House burned down in the Tea Fire, but driveway is still just fine!)

Stonehouse Architectural Products has permeable paving stone. They had a demonstration of the pavers at Earth Day a couple of years ago. 564-2010.

Don't rule out rolled gravel if slope is not a consideration. It's relatively cheap, permeable, and handles soil expansion and contraction. You can get different natural colors too.

We had System Pavers do ours - both front and back yard - a big job. It still looks terrific after 2-3 years. 805-856-8786 - ask for Dale Livingston, design consultant. They operate out of Ventura but do a lot of work up here.

We had ours done by PavLoc (now out of business), but they did a great job. The edges are cemented underneath, not piled up on the side. This makes it easier for the edger and sprinklers. Also, we had the company start with whole pavers at the bottom of the driveway, not cut little chips. Looks sooo much better. We have an 8" base, which is very, very important - keeps the stones from sinking during heavy rains. Very happy with out drive, and it's been about 12 years now since it was done. Don't forget the cement sealant, that will keep out the oil spots, etc To do it yourself, you can buy it at Home Depot and apply with a large sprayer.

I simply used "California Gold" fine gravel for my driveway and love the look. It is low cost, local, and allows most rainfall to soak into the ground vs. running off. Check out Goleta Building materials. You can also do the work yourself with a shovel, wheelbarrow, and a rake.

We had ours done by a firm that is no longer around. It looked great till the gophers went under it and some of the pavers sank. Any suggestions for repair? Those in gopher territory should consider prevention measures - wish we had.
