Walkway Work
updated: Jan 25, 2011, 8:38 AM
Referral please? I'm looking to spruce up the entry walk to my house....with either stamped concrete or maybe stone. A nice curved walkway with a matching porch at the front door. Who does nice work with fair pricing?

Just did ours in slate. It looks great. We ordered it from LA where, even with delivery charge (negotiable), it is less expensive then buying here.

Ted Walberg, Wlaberg Custom Concrete. 569-9956 Experienced, local, skilled, honest, and does absolutely beautiful work. He did our driveway, steps and sidewalk about years ago in a flagstone look, and they still look fabulous!

139714......It's a bummer to me that you seem to be proud of saying you didn’t support local business and bought your product out of town! I hope you at least used a local contractor for the installation. In today’s tough economy….local small businesses need and are counting on local community support. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t feel this way if you were a LOCAL business owner.

795: Unfortunately, not all of us can afford to spend more just to have something be local. (Not saying that is necessarily the case here, considering the product.) Also, to a lot of people, LA is local (I'm not one of them).

814…. LA is NOT local!!! I am a forth generation SB Small Business owner. It is extremely upsetting to me that people including are City Council do Not support local business and Contractors. Examples include: SB Airport, Downtown side walk work on Chapala, and SB Court House. People assume if you go out of town you will save money, and that is not the case in most situations. I personally would rather, if need be spend .05 more a square foot and give a local contractor and suppler my business.

There aren't any slate quarries in Santa Barbara, so one way or another, you're doing business with someone out of town when you buy the product.

What if all the "local" business owners who are always shouting "buy local" were themselves forced to buy local. I can just imagine . . . Pumpkins marinated in lemon juice for dinner AGAIN!?!?! All sarcasm aside, I am a pretty strong buy local guy, but it has limits and those limits are reached pretty quickly when you get into specialized building materials. And even a plain Jane 2x4x8ft stud from a local yard comes from not-very-local sources. And any contractor with the resources (skills, manpower, wide variety of specialized heavy equipment, etc) to pull off the airport project would die for lack of food if they depended only on Goleta/SB for business.

Santa Barbara Surfacing has done good work for our HOA, don't know if they do tile or stone though.

Gier Masonry does really nice work, Eric has been our masonry subcontractor or many years. I would suggest flagstone as a good landscape-enhancing material to use.
