Oprah's House
updated: Jan 22, 2011, 10:15 AM

By the dedicated staff, photos by John Wiley

The South Coast's most famous part-time celebrity, Oprah Winfrey, said she'd be living full time in her Montecito estate after ending her talk show and starting her OWN network.

But after a few weeks of driving back and forth from LA, she told an interviewer that it takes too long to get from Hollywood to Montecito by car, and she might need a place further south. We have an idea for how she could spend all those hours in the back of the limousine - how about reading Edhat?

We don't suggest dropping by unannounced to drop off a farewell gift, but here's how to find her opulent estate.

Oprah lives at 1633 East Valley Road in Montecito, an address that's surprisingly easy to find by doing a simple Google search. Go driving around trying to find it and things will get a little more challenging - you can't actually see anything of the house from the road, and the best view is perhaps from the air. See photos from Edhat contributor John Wiley at the end of this article.

To get there from downtown Santa Barbara, take Hwy 101 South to the San Ysidro Road exit. Go left on San Ysidro for a mile, and then right on East Valley Road for a half mile. Oprah's estate will be on your right.

Oprah purchased her 23,000 square foot home for $52 million in 2001, and reportedly it wasn't even officially on the market when she offered to buy it.

The property has been customized to fit her lifestyle, including a closet for boyfriend Stedman Graham's suits that's as big as a master bedroom. Outside, the grounds include a tea garden, which was featured in an issue of O Magazine.

Her place has been the location for many parties, including her own birthday celebrations.

She threw a big local soiree for then candidate, now President Barack Obama that required shuttles from Earl Warren Showgrounds.

Her guests often stay at the nearby San Ysidro Ranch, known for the privacy it offers famous folks.

It's worth mentioning that Oprah isn't a local celebrity who you'll see out and about around town. In fact, the dedicated staff knows of no one who has ever seen Oprah in Santa Barbara in person. Have you? People have seen her boyfriend, Stedman, who probably has an easier time going out incognito, even though he is 6 feet 6 inches tall.

And every once in awhile, she gets gas herself (driving a Bentley) and gives a big tip She's also rumored to like Lucky's, a popular Montecito steakhouse. And, she's a generous neighbor, giving $1 million to a campaign to help rebuild our local Cottage Hospital, which makes her a pretty good neighbor.
