Rumors of big swells moving down the coastline travel fast with the advent of the Internet and
NOAA wave model websites.
Gone are the days of climbing in your car in the early morning hours and driving the coast,
somewhat randomly, looking for surf. Pros and cons to both approaches, for sure. But for some reason I like the later.
It was more of an adventure. And if we didn't find surf, we could always get tacos and hot coffee at the Malibu Jack-
in-the-Box at 6:30 a.m. with the homeless.
The wave forecasts have been predicting big surf for the last few days.
My friend, Joe, just happened to mention the day before that he'd be doing a surf check in
light of the swell predictions. Completely unannounced and unplanned at 6 o'still-somewhat-dark, I gently tapped on
Joe's front door so see if he was awake, not wanting to wake his wife Ellen. Sure enough, Joe came to the door and
spontaneously jumped in the car. Visions of high school surf checks raced in the mind of this 56-year-old surf rat.
We bee-lined it to Rincon. Attached are a few pics of the Rincon surf and, more importantly,
mi amigo, Joe.
