Bed and Breakfast
updated: Jan 19, 2011, 10:47 AM

I'm looking for recommendations for a B&B, boutique hotel etc. Here in Santa Barbara and near Solvang/Los Olivos/Ojai. My Godson and his fiancee are coming for a weeklong visit at the end of April beginning of May and would like to split there time between the two areas. Neither of them has ever visited California and their desire is to fully experience Santa Barbara and our local wine country. His company will be paying the bill as it is a corporate prize that he won. We've not stayed at any of the local hotels since our move here three years ago and have no idea what to recommend. I've heard some good things about The Canary Hotel but we've never been. Any input would be helpful.

Oh, the very best B&B in SB is The Simpson House Inn.
It is the "only AAA 3 Diamond Inn in North America". Rooms and gardens are beautiful, nice local people own it and have for many years, located on Arrellaga between SB Street and Anacapa St. Yummy full-sized breakfast.

The San Ysidro Ranch is absolutely beautiful. If cost was no object that's where I would go.

Try 'Inn of the Spanish Garden' 915 Garden St, rated #1 on Trip Advisor.com....right in the middle of things downtown, but far enough to have some quiet in the evening.

I second The Simpson House...which I believe has a 5 diamond rating, or at least they did...it's very nice.

If $$ is no object, The Biltmore is pretty awesome, and of course the The San Ysidro Inn is pretty nice too!

Simpson House is really nice, also very expensive. The Biltmore definitely gives you the SB vibe, all that tile and the ocean right outside.

My parents once stayed at The Cheshire Cat Inn while visiting me, which is on Valerio and Chapala. It's located in two Queen Anne houses and each room has a different Alice in Wonderland theme. According to my parents, the complimentary breakfast was fabulous--they also have a spa and other nice touches.

They might check out the California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns where they can sort by city and a number of amenities. They list 8 in the SB area, 3 in Solvang, with prices and details for each.

FYI Ojai is nowhere near Solvang/Los Olivos.

We celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary with a really lovely stay at Fess Parker's place in Los Olivos. Not a B&B but the service was outstanding and the room/bed/hot tub was fabulous. Google "Fess Parker Wine Country Inn & Spa".

For the Santa Ynez/Solvang area, here are two fabulous places: http://www.santaynezinn.com/ and http://www.ballardinn.com/index.htm.

I love them both!

I love the Upham. My husband and I go there once a year and love Louie's, the evening oreos and milk, the many guests visiting UCSB faculty, the great breakfast and morning papers in our jammies (almost) and rooms with fireplaces.

The Cheshire Cat. But Santa Barbara is filled with very stylish B&Bs.

The Hadsten House in Solvang is a beautiful boutique hotel, exquisite decor, super comfy beds, a spa and the breakfast is fantastic.

Check out AAA 4-diamond rated Santa Ynez Inn and Ballard Inn in the Valley--both beautiful, luxurious yet friendly service. Simpson House Inn in Santa Barbara is rated AAA 5-diamonds--the only B&B in the world with that honor for more than 20 years!

I've heard good things of the Wine Valley Inn, haven't had a chance to stop by there yet but it's on our plan of places to visit.

well I'd vote for The Eagle Inn. It's only 2 blocks to the beach, and a 10 minute walk to State St. It's less expensive and more of an informal atmosphere than some of the other places listed. Plus a lot of their rooms have fireplaces, balconies and 2 person whirlpool tubs!

In Solvang, the Mirabelle Inn is lovely and just a couple blocks from the center of town. It features great watercolors from local artist Roy Robertson. Also quite famous is the Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort. It has golf, tennis, horseback riding, etc. on hundreds of acres. I believe Jack and Jackie Kennedy stayed there once upon a time. While here, visit the Wandering Dog Wine Bar for tastings of boutique local and international wines.

If you aren't "rolling in dough," Solvang's best buy in a lovely Inn on Alisal Road (on the way to the River Course at Alisal) is: link .... I like the loft room on the right side of the back building, overlooking the garden, with its own private parking spot and outdoor steps to private entrance.

Inn of the Spanish Garden is beautiful, has a breakfast and happy hour, and best of all has parking. It is a gem.

The Simpson House on Arrellaga street: It is THE best! PS, I'm not affiliated in any way. I've stayed there, and used to live around the corner from them. It's B-U-T-FULL!
It's around the corner from Alice Keck Park Park, which we all know is lovely and romantic.

I agree with other posters here, the Inn of the Spanish Garden IS lovely. But if money is no object, go with the Simpson House. Historic upper-east side victorian, charming gardens, walking distance to the Arlington, etc...

So many beauties, so little time!
In. Santa Barbara:
-Simpson House -Oceano (on the beach!)
-Upham (stay in the old part, or at least dine there)
-(R.I.P. El Encanto, we miss you)

In The Wine Country (aka Santa Ynez...)
-i have heard that some wineries have "guest rooms". I believe Melville Winery has some. That would be worth a try. Otherwise, why not keep driving to Sycamore Hot Springs Inn? It's glorious, and unique.

In case they do want to go to Ojai, stay at the Emerald Iguana, about three blocks from downtown. Wonderful gardens, rooms/suites, gloriously/tastefully decorated.
