Cheese Curds
updated: Jan 19, 2011, 9:07 AM

Is there anywhere in Santa Barbara that sells fresh cheese curds? I'd love to make fresh mozzarella at home; I just need a source for the curds. Thanks!

There is a awesome cheese guy that sells cheese curds at the farmers market. Not sure when Santa Barbara has their markets but Carpinteria has theirs on Thursday and he is always there.

@138036 Those are not the kind of cheese curds you need to make fresh mozzarella, they are for snacking.

Umm...curds are part of the process of making cheese? To make Mozzarella, you just need milk, rennet and citric acid. A simple google search will show you many techniques and recipes.

You know you can make your own curds right?
Check Sunset magazine site for the recipe.
If you want rennet I 've only found it in Santa Ynez at the Frontiers Market on Alamo Pintado.

Does anyone know of a local source for vegetable rennet?

Warning to the health conscious: Vegetable rennet is almost always made from genetically modified products...

C'est Cheese sells two cheese making kits - one for soft and one for hard. Looks fun!

Polly-O brand sells the makings (whatever they're called) for fresh mozzarella. If you have a friendly local deli, chances are they deal with a distributor of Polly-O products, and might order it for you. It might come in a large qty, like 5#, not sure.

De Palo & Sons Deli in Shell Beach (formerly Spyglass Liquor) makes their own fresh mozz under the name Dr Tedone's. They use Polly-O. It's wonderful but very pricey.

I know you can mail order it from a company on the east coast. My cuz does this and says it makes fabulous mozzarella.

I've seen the snack type cheese curds at Trader Joe's. I've also had fried cheese curds in Madison Wisconsin. That was a big cholesterol hit for sure.

Ask about the house-made mozzarella at Via Maestra 42.
And thanks for this inquiry, cheesemaking is fun (and not just for Green Bay Packers fans this Sunday!)

Well if you are ever in San Luis Obispo, you have to go to Cal Poly- Dairy Products Technology Center and ask for Jerry. He is the master cheese maker and he has cheese curds that you would literally scream for. They are so good. Trust me on this.
