The Field of Champions
updated: Jan 29, 2011, 8:30 AM
"The Field of Champions" - the Turf Capital Campaign - is a collaborative
fundraising effort between the Santa Barbara Soccer Club, the San Marcos High
School community, and the Athletics Booster Club. The fundraising partnership
"The Field of Champions Campaign" to raise $850,000 has been forged to achieve
the common goals of enhancing the quality of the Puailoa Field at San Marcos
High School, used by over 24,000 youth athletes, community groups, coaches,
teachers, spectators, and community members a year. A successful campaign will
result in the replacement of the 40-year-old existing grass field with synthetic
turf, a safe and more environmentally sound playing surface for all to enjoy.
Currently, the campaign has raised over $300,000 towards the goal of $850,000.
Donations at this time would be an important gift to our campaign. Donations can
be made on line at: www.thefieldofchampions.org, mail to P.O. Box 60208, Santa
Barbara CA 93160, or call (805) 679-7592.
Under the non-profit 501(3)© status of the Santa Barbara Soccer Club,
fundraising efforts have engaged San Marcos High School and Santa Barbara Soccer
Club alumni, parents, and athletes with foundations, charitable organizations,
Santa Barbara and Goleta businesses, and private donors to bring this effort to
a successful conclusion in 2011.
The new surface will enhance the training and performance of Club soccer players
and other non profit groups who use this community resource. There is a critical
lack of fields for soccer, a sport that is enjoyed by elementary school-age to
adults from all income levels. Replacement of grass by turf will save water
resources by one million gallons per year (Goleta Water District estimate)
thereby increasing water available for other community priorities. The new field
is made from 100% recycled tires.
As soon as the turf is installed, there will be safer athletic programs,
facilities to broaden community involvement in athletic programs, operating cost
savings, and significant environmental benefits for the school as well as the
surrounding neighborhood, city, and county.
A contribution will help achieve the goal of building a facility to benefit the
youth of our community . . . boys and girls soccer, football, boys and girls
track, cheer and dance squads, Special Olympics, the Marching Band, Jazz Band,
and many coaches, teachers, and spectators.
