Termite Exterminator
updated: Jan 17, 2011, 11:27 AM

Is there a time of year when termites are most active? I want to have my house checked for termites. What company do you recommend, or do NOT recommend?

Escalera or Lenz. Competitive prices and professional work .

Not Hydrex. They get you with annual service contracts and spot applications, but their work isn't guaranteed.

The only thing that truly eradicates termites is tenting.

Clark did my house and was more thorough at inspecting two outbuildings which also needed tenting. Fast and efficient.

LENZ, extremely reputable, they are coming to our house to check this week. Don't ever wait too long, sometimes they can take care of smaller infestations.

Don't know if it matters when they are most active. Home can be reinfested almost immediately although it takes some time for a new colony to cause damage. I am not a pest control person but am going by what they told me. Might want to check with a company that uses TIMBOR. I don't think that it can reach all areas of your house but offers long lasting protection against all kinds of things including dry rot.

We just discussed termite exterminators on Edhat, maybe a month ago. Do a search?

Termites always flare up around Spring time.

My contractor says there's no point in tenting since the guarantee is for only two years and the termites still come back. Treat separate areas every year instead. I've been using Lenz for years and like them.

Tenting kills all the termites (and other bugs) in the house, but a new infestation could start a few days after the tent is removed by just a few flying termites, or by the subterranean type coming up out of the ground. That's why a proper inspection is best. We ducked out of tenting for a decade with periodic spot treatments, but eventually, tenting was the only practical answer.

I highly reccomend - - - Rick Bradley - - - for a careful inspection and well-chosen spot treatments. Many of his treatments leave borax residues deep inside the wood and these areas never showed any evidence of reinfestation. Tenting ws needed only when we had a number of infestations in different parts of the house in wood that was not directly accessible.

Generally hot weather in summer or late spring produces hatchings and swarmings. Lenz is a repuatble company. Effective treatment generally requires use of pesticides not the gimics often advertised, eletcric shock, cold treatment, orange oil, etc. Spot spraying is effective for area control and reducing damage but tenting is the only solution to kill the pest at least for a while until there is a possible reinfestation. The key for damage risk is the type of termite involved (dry, wet, etc) and whether they simply flew into areas in your homes basement or attic or came to the wood structures from the ground, the latter being the worst!

Yes, Rick Bradley is great for non-toxic termite application. Don't use the commercial highly toxic pesticide whole house application. Do some research and discover the commercial pesticide applicator scam. It is a huge $$$$ business. Keep your family safe from unnecessary exposure.

Lenz is the best, they don't make you sign year long contracts and like said already guarantee their work.

Also, if you're dealing with gophers they take care of that with out using poison!!!
