We recently adopted a new pup. He's an extremely cute Husky\Lab? mix and so far has been very well behaved and a great addition to the family. However he is in desperate need of a full on grooming. Can anyone recommend a good groomer in Santa Barbara who will not break the bank? Also do you typically tip a groomer, if so how much? Thanks!

Colleens is great. But you neglected to mention breed. Some groomers do better than others depending on breed and coat type (of the dog)

TJ Paws on de la Vina. Locally owned by a man who truly loves dogs. He always goes the extra mile with my Golden, who swims a lot and gets very matted up.

Sue at Little Dog House is wonderful. Particularly for terrier types. I also have used Ian Musgrove who owns Groovy Grooms and has a mobile truck. He's also at Dioji on Fridays by appointment, I believe. Both are excellent and you don't have to worry about your dog being exposed to hot air dryers and the like.

You can groom your own dog... I do...It is 10.00 at Petco they have the bath tub, the blow dryer, and supply shampoo's, etc. You do not need to take a simple dog who gets, bathed, blowed out to a groomer! I use to groom dogs for 5+ years!

Little Dog House. Although all the gals are great ask for the Best HairDresser in town...Sue. FYI, I didn't have a good experience with Colleen. She nicked my dogs ear twice (two different visits) and didn't tell me either time and I incurred the vet bill both times. Won't ever go back.

I like Barbara from Laundrumutt. Used to be on De La Vina Between Mission and Pedregosa now she's on Haley I believe. She's top notch and the dogs are not confined to cages or tied up. They have free roam of the back area (Providing Good Behavior)

TJ paws on DelaVina next door to Jedlickas. Josh is great with dogs and you can wash your own. They will help you with everything you need or drop off your dog and they will wash it for you. Fast, usually do not need an appointment.

Dandy Dogs in Goleta..on Calle Real...a one woman shop. The woman who owns it is the groomer and has been doing it for years. She is very good and caring and costs much less than other shops. I take my labradoodle to her and other people I know take their dogs to her as well. Highly recommended.

Barbara formerly of Laundromutt is now at Petco at 5points. She always does a great job with my extremely furry lab & am.Eskimo mix. If you want cheap, then go to do-it-yourself place. Hendry's beach also has a coin-operated DIY dog bath station.

Colleen is nice, but load and crowded. My retriever loved Petco at 5 Points Shopping Center. We shaved her int the summer to keep her cool. Another good tip is Program, a non-toxic product that prevents flea eggs from hatching. That, plus an old fashioned flea comb does the job in between groomings.

J Paws at DelaVina & Constance is my choice. Several groomers work out of there if you have a speciality breed, but call to see if they are there or make private arrangements. Wonderful place to wash your own dog with towels, shampoo & conditioners, grooming tools & hair drying stations. Our medium size dog is $25 for self serve as I recall. Get nails cut for a nominal fee ($5). Josh is the owner and recently repainted.

The first choice I'd recommend is to do it yourself, nice bonding time with you and your dog(s) and Josh (&Tony) at JPaws on De LaVina & Constance have all but electric clippers for customers use. Tony showed me the most efficient and shortest approach (dogs like short) wash method with the no tears on head then add mealeuca to shampoo for rest, etc. Best cleaning I'd had for my cocker. Anja, an excellent and lesser expensive groomer is back at Josh's now. Ian's Groovy Grooms has Taylor assisting him with his clients now. He does an excellent job. Colleen's had every one of my dog's nails bleeding after a nail clipping, then it took a long year to get my dog back to letting me clip them at all. One of the potential problems there with the employees , but not with Colleen herself. Try one of the do-it-yourself first with your dog, see if it works for you. If not, you will appreciate the groomers' skills more.

Sorry about the poor editing of my prior entry.... Anja, at Josh's on DeLaVina & Constance, did the "lion cut" on my newly adopted Chow/Golden last summer and showed me what tools to use to keep the undercoat under control myself...And Ian did the same for me after the first dog I ever had with undercoat, and which I had ignored, was cleaned up and beautified by him... & Ian does very well on dogs that are requiring that extra TLC to cooperate, including dog's with nail trim phobias.

Sounds like you might be an inexperienced dog guardian? Personally, I have always groomed my German Shepherds myself. You want your pup to have a good experience. If you opt to self-groom, a couple of tips. Always trim nails before the bath, not after. There are a couple of nail clippers available that warn you so you don't hit the quick. It is better to take too little off because too much hurts. You should have the powder on hand to stop the bleeding just in case. There are also doggie dremels that allow you to file the nails. Again, don't stay in one place too long. A little shampoo goes a long way. I bathe my girl in the bath tub so I can use warm water and rinse all the soap off no matter how wet you get. You should towel dry well & never use a hot or warm hair dryer. Blow drying with cool air will probably be needed for your dog's coat, be sure to dry the area under the arm pits. It you have a canister vacuum cleaner you could put the hose on the exhaust side and blow dry that way, blow close to the skin. I use a furminator brush, it does a great job on the undercoat. Just don't get too agressive with it. Reality, dogs shed and that means they are healthy. Get a Dyson Animal vacuum and a pack of lint brushes. I have found that a khaki wardrobe for me is much better than black. Grooming your dog yourself is a great time to bond. Good luck!

Hi, the name of my business is "Before and After Dog Grooming". (805-570-0745) I have been grooming in the Santa Barbara-Montecito-Goleta area for almost 27 years. I mainly do smaller breeds in the comfort of the customer's home. My services include anything from just nails to full double bath/ dry and clip. (includes ear cleaning, nails cut and filed, medical and dental lookover, etc.) I am open for more clients at the moment so I appreciate this opppurtunity. Thanks, Cathy McGarry 805-570-0745
