I'd suggest staying away from the chiropractor and going to a good osteopath instead. They usually can fix the problem in a safer and more gentle way. Tim Schulz (or Schultz) is a good one to try. 966-0055

Low back pain is often piriformis muscle spasms in your rear end. (PIA syndrome) Knead this area and see if this is where the sense of "lower back pain" is coming from. Roll those tight areas over the top of a tennis ball is often all you need to do to break these spasms. Or ice cold compresses. And then some meaningful stress reduction that works for your own unique set of stessor triggers to break the cycle.

Chronic back pain sucks! I'm not a fan of typical "twist, crack, pop" chiropracic technique and so I strongly recommend that you Google DNFT (for Directional Non-Force Technique) to understand what it is, then try making an appointment with either Dr. Serena Singer 899-1210 or either of the Dr. Nelsons (mother and daughter) 962-4904. I've referred a number people over the years and nearly everyone has called back ecstatic. Had I know about DNFT 20+ years ago, I likely could have avoided surgery. Good luck

I second 135979. Unless you're in significant distress, and can't move easily, it's a good suggestion to try first. If the pain is really on the very low part of the back, right over the inner glutes, and you know you don't have a prior injury, consider doing some serious hamstring stretches. Being inactive or having tight hamstings actually shortens and pulls down those muscles on the lower back leading to stiffness and pain. Most muscle pain is sourced elsewhere and works it's way to a trigger point in the thinner muscle bands.

Chronic back pain does suck, and not just for the sufferers! After listening for years to my spouse utter 'ouch' when merely bending down to pick up a spoon off the floor....it was time. Chronic back pain is very often a symptom of the 'core' being weak. After 6 months of a regimen of stretching and strengthening (weight lifting), the problem was solved. Hire a good personal trainer if not experienced with weights and hit the gym to relieve that back pain...it won't hurt to see a doctor too. link

@006....The OP asked about recommendations for a Chiropractor for lower back pain. Chiropractic is a hot issue for some...either you think its quackery or a godsend. If it's helping people, that's great. No, I'm not a doctor, nor was I giving medical advice...merely, a recommendation for an alternative that just might actually help this person.

Kevin English - very good, very gentle, and probably saved my life. The first time I saw him, he recognized some very unusual symptoms, and had the right imaging equipment to diagnose them. Then told me "No chiropractic for you, you need to see a neurologist." Two weeks later I was in surgery for a spinal fusion. Thanks Kevin!

Dr English was great to me after I was in a car wreck 13 years ago. His treatments were light and gentle, felt heavenly and after a few months I was back to 100%. He was very genuine and personable. Glad to hear he's still in business here in town. I've seen a new place "Crystal Chiropractic" in Old Town Goleta on Pine. Crystal is the daughter of Dr Clinton who had a long time practice just blocks away.

I want my fellow Edhat commentators to know that I have nothing against Chiropractors, and in fact I should have mentioned that my spouse benefited greatly from seeing a local chiropractor for lower back pain. The Chiropractor wisely instructed my spouse to work on the root cause of the pain through strengthening (weight training) and stretching (yoga) and it was a remarkable change once the core muscles were strong again.

There are many different styles of chiropractic. You might have to try a one or two before you connect with your chosen Doctor. Medical doctors try different blood pressure medications/antibiotics...ect. before finding the right combination. Santa Barbara is a small town and to survive in Santa Barbara/Goleta one has to be good. Dr. Boone/Dr. York/Dr. Hergenrother/Dr. English...all good but differ in their styles. You might also check your insurance plan to narrow your options.
