I am wondering if anyone knows where to get the biggest most affordable order of french fries in town made the way you want them?

I like my fries crispy -- "well done" and prefer shoestrings to steak fries. They do 'em right at the Nugget in Summerland and at The Spot in Carpinteria. (The Nugget has great lamb chops, by the way -- and really affordable pricing; The Spot is a great beach shack -- I'll eat a burger there any day!)

Every time I go there I am amazed that Del Taco includes fries with their combo meals. As far as fast food fries go, they are not that good. Carl's Jr and Wendy's are my favorite fast food fries. McDonalds is a distant third and Burger King fries are, well, inedible.

What about real Belgian fries? Can you find them in SB? I found them at Petro's in Los Olivios. They also come with garlic mayo as 491 mentioned (491, are they Belgian style fries at Dargan's?)

Dargan's frieds are great. I used to hate the In n Out fries too, until I saw Tom Hanks on a late night show talking about their unpublished secret menu. Google it... You can order your fries "well done" and they will be delicious and crispy, instead of the limp half-done fries they normally serve.

SBCC JSB Cafe downstairs has amazing fries. Thin Crisp and flavorfull. Kinda like Mc D's 20years ago. Also, the Brewhouse for happy hour. $2 for a plate of fries and ask for grated fresh garlic on top. This plus a $3 pint.. YUMMY.

Is it just me, or do the fries at In 'N Out always seem to be a bag of small, broken fry pieces? I've never gotten a bag full of fries that were over 2 - 2.5" long! They're tasty, but what a hassle to eat! Don't even try to dip 'em in ketchup 'cause you'll wind up dipping your fingertips.

Belgian fries, or pommes frites are fried twice...I haven't found any around here. That's probably a whole story for Ms. Lemonjelly to address! My kid likes the fries at Tinkers...curly fries with seasoned salt. Derf's used to have really good shoestring potatoes. McDonald's was the place when they still fried them in animal fat. The Habit has decent fries and not too expensive.

I recall that Lettuce B. Frank served Belgian style fries, twice fried. Mac's has served me chips that seemed twice fried, which technically was not the correct thing to do for British chips. This was late at night, when the owner wasn't there. He told me later the late night guys sometimes do it that way. This might actually be the closest I recall to Belgian fries, due to their chunky size. Add your own mayo. So, I won't say these are my favorite fries in town, but the OP seemed to be asking for a large volume and a low price. I'll suggest Woody's for that. They have a bucket sized family order. Their website says it's $5, so either the bucket size I once got is not longer available, or that's a darn good price. But downside of that is that you have to go to Woody's. :) Just kidding! There are many other good things you can get at Woody's besides their bbq. Add a Muleskinner burger for an absolute gutbuster of a meal.

French fried potatoes (or chips, as some of us call them) are bad for you in any way shape or form. If you simply can't resist, try sweet potatoes fries: they're marginally better. To answer the original question, the Margie's Diner chain is the most over-the-top in terms of amounts -- an order of fries there could easily feed a family of six.

I like the fries at Carl's, Jr. if they are freshly done. Ask for a fresh batch and they will do it for you. And thanks to the poster about asking for "well done" fries at In 'n' Out. I like their burgers but have never liked the fries.

Okay, this led me on the great In and Out Burger secret menu hunt and to several incredible articles on the subject! (Nothing like taking off on a tangent when I'm supposed to be working, right?) If you're curious too, try this: http://daviswiki.org/in-n-out_secret_menu -- much more comprehensive than even the "not-so-secret menu" listing on the corporate official website. Okay, now I really, REALLY got to get back to work! Until later, anyway.

Chips or fries or pomme frites have been European diet staples for centuries. They are healthier and fitter than most Americans so stop demonizing perfectly good food. Balance and moderation is key, along with a fit lifestyle. There is no bad food; but there are plenty of bad choices.

Wow...the only thing worse than the BBQ at Woody's is their fries. And don't get me started on their disgusting shoestring onion "rings". Talked to a bartender at Dargans and he says they receive their fries (I assume frozen) already blanched in oil. Maybe that's the way all frozen fries are prepared for sale...who knows. Anyway, when they fry them (for the second time in the fries' life), they are technically cooked "Belgian" style. But then again, if you accept that then ANY fry that is not freshly cut from a potato (like In 'n Out) has been cooked twice.

Are the fries being mentioned Naked? I personally detest the current trend for fries to come with a cornstarch coating 'for extra crispiness'. And that--gag--awful stale "Cajun ' seasoning? Please! Give me red potato fries with light salt, please. The browner the better. Pete's Pierside at the end of Harford Pier in Avila Beach does them the way I like. Del Monte Cafe in SLO also does them TWIL, but with russets.
