Tree Pruner
updated: Jan 09, 2011, 11:15 AM
Can anyone recommend someone to prune fruit trees? We have plum, apricot, apple, and orange. Is this even the right time?

Don't do it yourself, you could do a lot of damage. IMO, there is definitely an art to pruning a tree. Look in the phone book for an arborist I would suggest Goleta Valley Beautiful, for references.

You are in luck. This coming Saturday, Jan. 15, the CA Rare Fruit Growers club is having a local meeting in Goleta, and the public is invited, starting at 10a.m. There will be a demonstration of proper pruning of a fruit tree. They will also sell a whole bunch of clever fruit trees that you've never heard of. It's a wonderful FREE event, and you just show up. Contact: Norm Beard, 200 Ellwood Ridge Road, Goleta (805) 968-0989

The Santa Barbara Food Bank will send people to trim your trees and give extra fruit to hungry people. You can find it on their website, called "Backyard Bounty."

consider summer pruning if the trees are young or after you have the old dead wood removed. Pruning in winter can produce more unwanted shoot growth which necessitates continue hard pruning. Alot of work. Where as summer pruning does not promote as much sprout growth. Check out the dave wilson nursery webside for backyard fruit culture and pruning practices.

134866: I don't think SB Foodbank will prune your trees. They will harvest the fruit from them, but I don't recall them offering to prune trees (and after a quick look at the website, I couldn't find that info).

La Sumida and perhaps Home Improvement Center have classes on how to prune roses and fruit trees. It isn't that hard and the results of (ordinary) bad pruning are not that devastating.

Ha! Ha! "Pruning" fruit trees...that made me laugh. Good luck finding someone who will do a good job, and make sure you get someone who comes with references because it's not something you want to take chances with. Someone who "says" they can do this isn't enough, and you absolutely want to be sure that your trees get pruned correctly.
