Where's a good place to get wall to wall carpeting? Is it possible to beat the BIG BOX guys? My needs are simple....decent carpeting...I need it installed in a couple of bedrooms and a dining room...all simple rectangular spaces.
Maybe one of the mobile showroom guys? A small mom and pop shop in a low rent district? Who does a good job at the best price? What questions should I ask?

We have used Renga, local and nice people. I recently needed just a couple of small bedrooms re-carpeted and went to Abbeys (also locally owned) at the end of Chapala. They have a remnant area and I got a great price on 100% wool carpet, installed. The installer was such a nice guy too. Give them a try if you just need a smaller amount of carpet..it's a hit or miss if you will find what you like in the remnant area...but worth a look. Another plus...the great taco place right across the street!

I agree with 279 - outdated and unsanitary! Why anyone wants a rug they can't take outside and beat is beyond me . . .

279: I live hardwoods, and would probably get that when I get a place of my own, but I know my pet won't appreciate it. :) She likes the traction on carpeting, and won't go in the kitchen/bathroom. And I'm afraid she'd chew the edges of a rug if I had one... And it's cheaper to carpet than do hardwood floors throughout. And some people prefer carpeting, anyway. Not everyone cares what went out in the 70's. I for one want to bring back bell bottoms... :D

After 18 years on hardwoods I am ready for carpet. Hardwoods are greatly overrated and the maintainance is a pain in the neck.

Dalgenes Interiors, 210 E. Ortega, just off SB St. The owner can get you overtstock for good prices. Talk to Gail. 805-965-7751 Nice local people, been in business for years. My feet love the warmth and softness of wall-to-wall carpeting, at least in bedrooms.

Lens is very good, local, reasonable with a good selection. The owner and family members actually work in the store. "Kooch" (Len) Ramirez knows his stuff and is a personable guy. Lens has put in our carpet, along with my parents' houses, for many years.

TJ's carpet and flooring, they are out in Goleta. We used them for our entire house when we remodeled (both carpet and wood) and if we redo the bathroom, we'll use them for tile as well. Local family, really personable, quick service, good prices.

Oh, good timing on this as I am in the process of looking for about 36 yards of carpeting for two of our bedrooms. I've looked at Home Depot, TJ's carpeting in Goleta, and Dalgene's and Curtis Flooring which are downtown. If I want to get anything above "rental" grade carpet, the best pricing I have seen is $28/yd after padding, installation and taxes. Am just about to give Dalgene's the go ahead on a nice Berber remnant at that price, but now I may check out the remnants at Abbey's (and get some Tacos) before pulling the trigger.

@134286P - I don't think carpet is unsanitary. It's only as unsanitary as the people living in the home. Beating an area rug out hardly de-germs or sanitizes that carpet. It just gets rid of dust. Any bacteria remains. I think carpeting is great for those of us who live in homes that don't have the best heating systems. I know we'd freeze in winter if our bedroom had hard wood floors. Not to mention the whole natural flooring vs dog toenails thing.

Yes, $28/yd seems to be the "floor" for decent installed carpet in this town. My most enjoyable visit was to Jim at Curtis Carpets. He is a really nice guy, and respected our budget, and only showed us carpets that fit within our range. They have a nice plush beige carpet for $28/yd installed there too. Roger: Setup a Craigslist search for "carpet". I have seen plenty of 10'x10' new pieces come up for under a $100 in the last month, including this one for $75 I was close to checking out.

Why would you want problem loaded carpeting when there are so many other more sanitary, longer lasting and beautiful floor coverings such as laminate, cork, vinyl, etc. which come in endless beautiful patterns and colors? Carpet may look attractive but is a haven for mold, dust mites, allergies, pet pee smells, etc., etc. Plus it must be replaced every 5 or 6 years. Look before you leap! Firm surface with area rugs is the fashionable and healthy way to go.
