Milkshake
updated: Jan 06, 2011, 3:28 PM

Who makes the best milkshake in Santa Barbara? Preferably one with a less than $8 price tag? (McConnell's, I love ya. But times are tough.)

Speaking of counting calories....a milkshake doesn't even come close to getting good until it has topped the 1000 calorie point.

Yep, the Natural cafe ones are surprisingly good, they also make malts too, which are hard to find these days!

If you have a blender you can easily make a milkshake. A jar of malted is available for under $8 at most grocery stores. Get some good ice cream and whatever fruit you like and a little milk to thin it to your taste.

Quite inexpensive, good control of ingredients, not much work.

Anyone else find the whipped cream on the Goleta Habit's shakes weird? I think it has an off taste (my bf has never noticed). Since so many seem to enjoy the Kahuna, what's the best shake they offer? Coconut always intrigued me, but I haven't gotten one yet.

Peet's Mocha Freddo is awfully good though technically not a milkshake. And does come with a 300 plus calorie tag.

I think Kahuna Grill makes the most amazing shakes. They are made from real ice cream and it makes a difference. Most non-ice cream stores make it with that awful palm oil.

For localvores, Breakwater Restaurant at the harbor is the best, especially with mint chip ice cream.

For big restaurant chains, IHOP is good for milkshakes. Bonus there at IHOP as such a large chain should also include the caloric content on the menu!!

For the best milkshake that won't cost much, go to the SBCC Cafe. It's basic and delicious like the old fashioned ones made in the 50's. None of this soy-mocha-with-a-shot-of-foofoo milkshake. It's real ice cream with milk, and it comes in a tall milkshake glass and they give you the tin (?) container with enough leftover to share it with your companion. The only thing is that you can only get it when school is in session during the lunch hour. Try the JSB Cafe for lunch, too, because even though it's a learning environment for the culinary students, overall they do a very good job with the lunch fare, My husband and I go there regularly (I teach at SBCC). Salmon with veggies and a salad bar for about 8 bucks? Can't beat it!

IHOP is good for a lot of things when one is looking at chain food. They deserve some credit because so many chains get a bad reputation, so it appreciated to learn their milkshake is as good as the rest of the food. Not fancy, but good food at good value prices. Our local one on State Street is a delight for good service as well as a nice place to visit and thanks for saving the landmark fig tree growing in the middle of it. how unique is that?

Yes, Peterson's used to have the very best. I was going to say that the best chocolate malt was at the Pepper Tree Inn - used to go there frequently just for that. No idea what it costs now though. In n Out would be my second choice these days.

A lot of milkshakes listed here are not real milkshakes. Remember they're not real milkshake unless they contain actual milk. You'll know it's not real when it's listed on the menu as just "shake," and in that case it's loaded with chemical fillers.
