Washer Repair
updated: Jan 05, 2011, 6:40 AM
My 15 yr old Maytag washer is leaking from a front corner. Very slow drips. Not when running, but in between when it hasn't run for a couple of days. (?)
Can anyone reccommend a reliable repair person in the Santa Maria area? I went into a local shop yesterday but it was dirty, unkept, and their service call is $85. (we bought from the SM Maytag store but they're out of business.)
Any help with this, edhatters?

I had many old Maytags and there is a little piece of tubing that fills the washer that sometimes either wears out or comes a bit undone. Once a mouse nicked it trying to get water when I lived in a forest environment and they were my constant friends ;-) You might be able to fix it yourself if that is the problem and save yourself some $.

Ruffonis Maytag is a authorized repair center, one thing you might consider is checking craigslist for a newer used model, you might save money and water use for the same price as a service call.

James at Integrity Appliance has been great. He has repaired both my Maytag washer and dryer. He's fast, professional and reasonably priced. I found him when my regular Maytag repair guy passed away and the service company didn't have any reps in Santa Barbara. They recommended James and I've been using him since.

513--how do I look at the tubing? must I turn the washer over or do you have to take the tub out?

Seedlady, check the Maytag website for the manual if you know the model number. Here's a link: link Sometimes a manual will have a parts list and other handy information. Good luck!

At that age is really not worth repairing. Will probably cost a pretty penny.

My husband's buddy tells me that the whole outside case comes off if you can find the couple of screws or clips. Then you can see all the guts of the machine. First, though, he said to check the connection hoses; he said they can develop leaks and should be replaced every 3 or 4 years (cheap at Ace hardeware) also the discharge tube could be split and leaking from the trap after using the machine, slowly dripping and running along the inside lip of the side panel to the front (lowest point) and dripping. Meanwhile, asking around, I got a reliable rec for Moon's Appliance Repair out of SLO. So I'll check the machine lines after use for moisture. If no go, I've got an spp't next week with Moon's. tanks, edhatters.

For those who say "Not worth repairing"...without even knowing what's wrong...go and waste your own money! I'd bet that whatever's causing the leak is made out either rubber or plastic...and is in-expensively replaced by the OP.... Maytags are usually well engineered...and hence easy to fix; once you figure out the secret of how to get inside. Open it up; take a look...and then make your decision.
