There is a mobile sharpening service in the yellow pages....Quality Cutlery. Phone number: 968-7852. Don't know if it's the same one, but years ago I used a mobile guy...he was great and not expensive.

We got a pretty decent little sharpener at Williams-Sonoma the other week. It works on any type of blade and its a manual one. No need for the expensive electric sharpeners or taking them to someone else. It sharpened up all of our knives quickly and easily (both expensive knives and cheap, very old ones.)

I think it was around $12.

I've always sharpened my own, first with whetstones, then a Lansky system, then the electric one, now a fast, efficient, cheap device from Outdoor Edge. Two tungsten rods, at the right angle, allow you to quickly draw the knife through it and sharpen most kitchen, hunting, and general purpose sharp knifes in 2-3 strokes. It gives a great sharp edge, at the right angle, with minimal effort, every time. I love it. It's only about $10 too!

I'm ordering a few this week for friends who've tried ours. If you'd like one too, let me know by leaving a message at the shop please -- 967-1138.

Bobby from All Sharp, hands down. He has a mobile business - a completely decked out van that comes to your home. We had all our family's knives & scissors sharpened before the Holidays. He's excellent

here's another plug for Bobby from All-Sharp. He is great - and a really nice guy to boot. Home Improvement Center also sharpens knives. Last time I had a chef's knife sharpened there, I think it cost about $4.

I would not recommend Sur la Table for sharpening. The staff seems pretty clueless when it comes to the service. I brought in a set of knives and the help said they would be able to sharpen all of them; they will be ready the next day. I go to pick them up and apparently they couldn't sharpen a number of them or maybe they did, the staff couldn't figure it out. After getting them home it's clear that they only sharpening 2 out of the 8 I brought in. These were not out of the ordinary knives in any means, just a typical chef's set. I'm not sure what the malfunction was and the staff couldn't either. I will not go back. Sharpening at home is ok, but you are not going to get the same results as a pro and can often damage your knives. If it's a cheap set, no biggie, but for an expensive set I'd get an expert to do it, it's actually not that expensive.

I bought a Chef's Choice electric sharpener and have used it a lot. Many models. I have the 2 station model with ceramic stones. Well worth it.
