Not locally-sourced but very interesting gifts can be found at Plum Goods on State Street. Many items are made from re-cycled materials. http://www.plumgoodsstore.com/

Santa Barbara Printmakers and Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative have prints for sale that benefit local artists. Only $50 each print. (most of these artists sell their work for much much more)

There will be a HOLIDAY CRAFTIQUE featuring a variety of one-of-a-kind arts and crafts items this Saturday Dec 18th from 10 am to 4:30 pm at 4159 State Street (behind All Around Landscape). Your best bet for locally made creative gifts.

I second the Holiday Craftique. Many local artists will be representing there. One is a friend, who takes wool and cashmere sweaters and repurposes them into crocheted baby hats and scarves. Her cashmere scarves are in the $40 range.

There should also be some good items from the Farmers Markets. Locally grown beans to bag up for ham-bone soup, canned jams and dried fruit. Good pistachios and dates, etc.

There have been some really nice ristas at the Farmers' Market (Sautrday, not sure if they are at others) lately. As Well as "Summer in a Jar" (aka Roots Farms tomatoes).

Goodland Gallery at Camino Real Marketplace. They had to move from their original location... believe they're near the AT&T store now.

Check out the website etsy.com, they have really cool handcrafted and vintage items there. You can do a search for the SB area to make it local, though there are numerous other great independent businesses too.

I think that giving gift cards to locally owned restaurants is a great gift.

Money is so tight for so many people right now that a night out is a welcome relief. And you're still supporting local businesses who can use more people dining out.

There are two fabulous local olive oil shops. On on upper state and one in the paseo nuevo mall. Both sell local olive oil and balsamic vinegars that are very nice gifts.

I went into Tienda the other day, and way in the back in the middle of the store they earings for $5. Now that is a steal, and the outdoor India spot on lower State Street has scarves for $10. I also went into Anthroplogy (sp) and if you check out all the tables there are some less expensive items under $40 there too.

Single tickets to Speaking of Stories can be had for $25 each. Ensemble Theater is a bit more. Songtree concerts in Goleta run $15 - $20 each.

Pretty sure a massage from a chain isn't what they were looking for. If you're going to go that route, go for a local spa, or if you wanna cheap out )like me) go to one of the local massage schools -$30 or $35 bucks for an hour massage. Great deal. As for me, I'll be hitting up either craftique and/or the Art Walk on Cabrillo.

Also The Goodland Gallery in Camino Real Marketplace. The gallery used to be next to the theatre, but has moved over across the entrance off of Hollister to a spot next to the AT&T store (and across the parking lot from Best Buy). They have wonderful locally made art and crafts. Many of the artists in The Art Walk have their work there.

Also Santa Barbara Arts year round local artisans gallery of handmade goodies from $5 up. Something for everyone. They are tucked back in the La Arcada corridor next to the museum of art. Check it out... My favorite!

Maybe as a change to local wine get some local beer from the telegraph brewing company. The owners are v nice and they host beer tastings there for something like $10. Also the chocolate gallery store in Goleta make all their own chocolate in store.
