I want to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday in September (2011) by taking him on a cruise to someplace warm. Any recommendations for cruise lines and locations to visit?

My recommendation is that you purchase trip insurance because September is hurricane season. Stay away from Carnival...too many kids.

The Caribbean is my favourite cruise. Trunk Bay on St John's is the most beautiful beach in the World. Antigua is fun. San Juan has an interesting history and well worth a two day visit prior to setting sail for the Islands. Eat at the restaurants in SJ recommended by the locals. It's good, great authentic cuisine, better than the over priced elaborate menus displayed outside the fancy tourist attracting restaurants. I grew very fond of the real Caribbean food, especially the Plantains. The Rain Forest is unforgettable. Good luck whatever you choose and have a wonderful time.

I'd highly recommend Voyages of Discovery (link). Looks like they will be in the Mediterranean in Sept. 2011. We went on a cruise with them in the South Pacific (to see an eclipse and Easter Island), and loved it. It's a great smaller ship (actually the twin to the Love Boat from the TV series). The food, service, staff, lectures, excursions, logistics, etc were great. There were few kids on board. We got extra perks like sitting at the captain's table and a private bridge tour partly because we had two of the five kids aboard. They have a different captain now, but it's an excellent line. (The only other cruise we've been on was MSC Cruises, and we were disappointed by the food.)

If you can afford to charter your own boat (with crew of course) this is an amazing way to see the islands....depends on how mobile and adventurous you are!

I agree, the Greek islands are amazing. If you want to try somewhere closer, Bermuda is fun.

Carnival out of San Juan was amazing. Seven islands in seven days. Hardly any kids and a great price. As was previously mentioned though, it is hurricane season and the Caribbean may be iffy. Where ever you go book a balcony it is totally worth it.

The Paul Gauguin is a SMALL ship that sails out of Tahiti to Bora Bora and all the other islands in the group. Lots of snorkeling, beach parties, breathtaking scenery.

Grenada is a great travel bargain. Not only is it a beautiful, safe and friendly place to visit but they may be one of the last places on Earth that hasn't caught anti-American fever. (I'm not commenting on whether or not it's deserved...) Believe it or not they not only greeted the US Marines as liberators after "The Invasion" (which they call "The Intervention") but they actually celebrate it every year as their Thanksgiving holiday. No joke.

Yes, the Paul Gauguin! We were aboard in July to see the solar eclipse...what a magnificent boat! Small, fantastic service, amazing food, casual dress, beautiful islands, and not an outrageous price, considering what you get as opposed to the monster, impersonal ships! You'll never regret it!!
