The lady at garden and cota? I heard she makes them in a bathtub at a multi-family-home somewhere on the east side, on Punta Gorda or Indio Muerta I think. Enjoy!

There are two places, both on Milpas, that cannot be beat. First is La Tapatia Bakery, on 832 Milpas at Cañon Perdido. Second, there is a lady that sells homemade tamales every day at 8:00 am at the USA gas station across the street from the Trader Joes on Milpas.

I'm lucky. I live on the lower West side and a little old lady stops by once or twice a week. I'm kind of worried though, I haven't seen her in three weeks. But before she came into my life I heard the bakery on San Andres had good ones. And judging by the lines I saw last Christmas Eve, it's true. Good luck!

I haven't seen the folks at Garden and Cota for several months now, at least on Saturday mornings when I pass by on the way to the Farmer's Market. Theirs were good, though. I liked their Guatemala style tamales with soft masa, whole pieces of chicken, wrapped in banana leaves.

COMMENT 125336 that has been nannified... You are so very wrong, you have no idea who I am, what race I am or anything else about me. The reason for my post is that everyone should be held to obey the law. If I'm not mistaken the vendors should have a license to sell thier wares. Seeing as how the Tamale thread is concerning a street vendor I would hope they have the correct certification / permits. My son was working in a gas station (no sick leave / insurance) while he was in school, he got a couple of Tamales from a street vendor. He missed a week of school, the Tamales were bad. Don't have any idea why I feel like I should explain myself but there you go. The reason for my question

Support local businesses that have gotten all the proper licenses and permits and follow the health codes and stay away from street vendors. We should support local businesses that follow the rules and not let unlicensed people undercut them. Plenty of good places are mentioned in this list sell tamales in town; there's no reason to support illegal street vendors.

I too agree that we should support those vendors who support their local gov'ts by getting proper permits and licenses.... There is a great restaurant, family owned on Hollister, the cleanest kitchen I've ever seen and very conscientious, curteous staff, the family makes tamales and enchiladas during the holidays and are taking orders already.... I am mentioning "Domingo's" which used to be located in the bowling alley before Zodo's bought the locale. Good food always and plenty of it at very reasonable prices and a good, faithful clientele.

I think santa Barbara would benefit from more street food. And I'm not taking about chic LA-style food mobiles. I'm a little surprised to hear so many people so scared of their environment and community. Yes, eating things might make you sick. Use your nose, eyes, and good sense and you'll probably be ok. Experiences are the spice of life. Buyer beware, of course. Then again, if you fully support the system then i suppose it makes sense to only live within it. Viva freedom.

693 has had plenty of adventures, I guarantee you, and is far from living in fear. Some involve ethnic food in foreign countries. But no reason to support people who are not following the laws instead of those who havelegitimate businesses, especially when lots of legit places sell a great product. At least if get sick, there's someone to go back to. I like to reward people who hardworking and run a legit business instead of people who undercut them and cheat the system.
