updated: Nov 22, 2010, 10:13 AM
What is the least expensive place for holiday lights? I'm ready to make the house look great,
but I'll still need money for gifts.... thanks in advance!

We gave up on outside lights 3 years ago. Don't think they are necessary, too frivolous and clearly a waste of power and money. I get sick when I see those figures blinking and flashing and blinding on streets, each house trying to out - do the other. Definitely a Christmas tradition created by commerce to suck up your money! I know, some will say"SCROOGE" but hey - each to his own. I'm not against a family wanting to spend good money on big electric bills if it makes them happy and they can afford it.... I just can't now.

Check the ads, or go to OSH and the drug stores have specials. The plastic entubulated ropes are not very expensiveand do not take much energy..

Do people throw out their light strings every year, therefore "needing" new every year? I've had strings for years. Maybe up to 10 years.

Last year I found about 800 lights dumpster diving many stores dump them after a year. Sometimes thrift stores have them.

if you have any strands of old lights you can bring them into a recycle center around town. when you bring an old strand, they give you a brand new strand of LED lights for free. There are a few different places and you can only bring one strand to each location. we have traded all our old lights in and decorated our house for free the last two years. just an fyi

You can turn in old lights for new LED lights for FREE. It's a program for energy saving. The new LED lights are prettier and use a teeny fraction of electricity, so save both energy and money. Is it the electrical company that organizes it? There were many places you could do that, they made it convenient. I was surprised the public library had some last year and just called to check, forgetting they are closed on Mondays now. We'd already bought new LED lights so didn't use the service but thought it a great idea. Maybe someone else will add the reference for who does this service, if still available?

TAZ I just did a Google search (a few ways) and came up empty. I also checked Edison's site. Hopefully someone out there "in the know" will post here.

I exchanged my lights through a City sponsored program. I went to a location behind Milk and Honey on Anapamu - upstairs. Cannot remember the name of the place.

we bought our LED lights at Target, yes a big box store with great prices! Also got a set of solar lights to put on the fence so no need for extra cords. Love holiday lights!
