Can anyone recommend a great and trustworthy carpet/upholstery cleaner that doesn't charge an arm
and a leg?

I always rented the Rug Doctor at Vons. Just buy the normal jug of shampoo. Don't get sucked into spending a lot of money for the fancy spot cleaners, etc. BTW, the shampoo & Rug Doctor will run you at least $50/day. Alfonso Lazaro (805-451-8591) will give you a comparable rate, do a better job, in quicker time. Ever since he has done my carpets I have stopped using the Rug Doctor.

Always used Castro, now maybe Castro and Sons. They have a Carpinteria number, but have always been prompt to appointments in Goleta and Santa Barbara. I hear Colemans' is good too.

Just my opinion but the professional job is worth the price over the rug doctor. With that machine you rent, you don't really get the solvents that get out the stains. You'll see them back in a few weeks, max. I forgot to mention that the last time I had my carpets cleaned by Del Bonis, just the other month, I think the tech mentioned they were using green products now. I'm not 100% sure, but something for comparison's sake.

I took Colemans a complete set of car carpets which they cleaned well. Removed all stains and odors.

We like The Naturalist too - they use an enzyme based cleaning solution which is non-toxic to you and your pets, and is environmentally friendly. Their work is guaranteed, so if it isn't perfect after the first go-round, they will come back and make it right at no extra charge.

Coleman's has been cleaning our carpets and furniture for decades. Since John started his business in San Roque. Cheap? No. But worth the extra $s.

I like The Naturalist. Very reasonable price (about half what Coleman's charges), and the carpet is completely dry in two hours at most. The carpets look great.

The Naturalist is good if you like your carpets to dry with a crunchy texture. I like Sylvestri at 805-451-5358. He uses a truck mounted machine (this is important as it's a much more powerful system than the smaller portable machines), his prices are reasonable, and he gets the stains out.

Don't use NuLife. Fairly expensive but they promise a superior job. However, carpet not very clean, puddles left on hardwood floor next to carpet and near feet of furniture, took all day to get dry enough to walk on, crunchy and sticky when dry.

Unique does an outstanding job! 962-4053. They did a great job on our 2 bedroom unit and our 1 bedroom rental and two large carpeted balconies for just $185.00. Stains that we thought would be there forever are GONE!

I had the Naturalist Co. come out and they gave a quote of $100 for 4 rooms. I had everything moved out of the rooms and vac’d when they arrived. When the carpets were done the carpet did not look like they were just cleaned and they were dull looking. The young man who came out to clean and who talked me into a sealant which was another $40, he was done in less than a hour and seemed to be in a hurry. I called and let them know I was not pleased with the job, and the 2 original guys came out to check his work and redid 3 of the rooms, but also charged me an additional $10 for chemical, they said. Now it is at a $150. It looked better, but the stains started coming back as it dried and was still looked dull.

So I called and had Absolute Carpet Care come out 3-4 days later, when they were finished (2.5 hours) the carpets were brighter and smelled clean. They use a hot water extraction, and I saw the water that came out of the machine. It was like café mocha color, not what you would expect for just cleaned carpet, 3x at that. And when he left the carpets were not real wet. It was raining that day. And they only charged me $90 with nothing extra.

We just used Tom Conklin of Santa Barbara Carpet Cleaning 569-7027 to spruce up our carpets for the holidays. He did a beautiful job for a fraction of the price charged by any other carpet cleaner we have used. I see he has been recommended by other readers, but he's so good, I thought this was worthy of an update.

We've used Erasmo at Fresh Rinse for many years and have always been completely satisfied- very reasonable and carpets are always clean. they will also always come back at no charge if spots surface after cleaning.
