You want the parts that chime to be made of wood? If not, go to the Art Walk on Cabrillo on Sunday...they have a lot of wood chimes.

We live in a very noisy world, so I'd put in a plug for some type of kinetic sculpture that doesn't make noise. When it is windy, our neighborhood sounds like an industrial zone, due to all the clanging, ringing, banging, etc of neighbors' wind chimes.

COMMENT 115480P - Nice plug but there are people that like the noise in our World. I really enjoy the sound of wind blowing thru the trees, surf crashing on the beach, birds sitting in your backyard tree singing and yes, even wind chimes.

The way I look at it is that the only other option there is, is to be without my hearing. I value that way to much to be dumping my views on everyone else about what my neighbors might be doing in their backyard.

I do agree that the wooden chimes have a much better sound than the metal ones.

Check the net for Picotte Windchimes. He's a local guy who makes great chimes. Really nice guy too.

ClearHeart Windchimes - they sell them at the Sunday art festival or call the guy - he's local. 805-966-5190. I have a set of these chimes in my backyard and they are NEVER noise. These chimes are very well tuned; they don't make noise, they make music! There are several 'ranges' to choose from, so going to the Sunday art show is probably the best thing to do; you can play them all there. I hope you enjoy! P.S. they aren't cheap (don't be shocked). These are high quality and it is reflected in the price!

Picotte's chimes aren't wood, but his definitely sound the best of any I've heard. I vote for Picotte's, too.

Mellow, deep, unobtrusive bonging wind-chimes can be produced using cut sections of discarded tanks for oxygen, nitrogen, and so on. Make sure your support is strong enough. You can get lucky or cut for pitch, trim to tune. First time I heard one of these things I thought the mother ship had arrived. (Nope, un-stoned)

Picotte chimes are awesome. He's local and you are supporting local artists. They are tuned beautifully. He has moved up from selling at the beach (no longer there) to a locally owned store that carries locally made art and craft. Go to SBArts next to the Museum of Art in La Arcada Court. They have a whole display of Picotte chimes and lots of other cool stuff.

I have metal windchimes from Picotte and they are really nice but I do like the bamboo type and the maple wood type for the softer "tinkle" sound they make. I found a good selection of bamboo types at World Market but it may not be the season for them now.

Try Ace hardware--they carry the Asian wooden ones that are softer in sound, and are nicely 'tuned'.
I try to hang chimes (one bell-shaped thrown stoneware, one mini-glass, one bamboo) where they won't catch too much wind. I find that I enjoy my chimes more if they only play occasionally. Otherwise, I tend to tune them out, as with other chronic noise, like my neighbor's barking and howling Labs.
