updated: Oct 26, 2010, 9:22 AM

As the days get shorter, and the bags of miniature sized candy bars pack the shelves of our local super markets, we know it's time for the Second Annual Edhat Halloween Story Writing Contest (EHSWC).
And just to get the pumpkin rolling, we've started the story for you. Here are the rules:
Entries can be no longer than 639 words (including the provided beginning), should be suitable for all ages (PG content, please), must include the opening we have provided, and must contain the following three words or phrases:
1. Black cat
2. Fog (or marine layer)
3. Randy Quaid
Your story can be scary or funny or something in between, we don't mind! All entries will be judged by an esteemed panel of Ed's friends, based on the following criteria:
1. Word count
2. Inclusion of the required beginning and words or phrases, and
3. If the judges like it
The Edhat dog will decide any ties (she loves short stories - she had two for lunch!).
Send your entry to ed@edhat.com by Midnight, 10-26-10. Enter "Writing Contest" in the subject line. Please include your name. Winner will be announced and the winning story posted on Sunday, 10-31-10. Honorable Mention stories will also be posted.
