My 70+ mom had minor surgery today (Saturday.) It was a little more involved than expected so
the doctor called in an Rx for Vicodin to CVS. They used local anesthesia for the surgery so after recovery, she felt
(and looked) like she had been run over by a Mac truck but drove herself home. By 6pm she started to worry that she
might need to take a Vicodin so the pain wouldn't keep her up. We couldn't find a pharmacy that stays open past 6pm on a
Saturday night from Carpinteria to Goleta!! Is that possible??? Not even one open until 9pm or midnight? Even her
doctor was stumped.
I hope her Tylenol does the trick but I'm honestly a little frustrated. Her only real option
would be to go to the ER. For post op Vicodin? That's a ridiculous waste of resources!

We can move an entire army across the ocean and desert to fight a 9 year war in Afghanistan. But we cannot get your mother a Vicodin on a Saturday night after surgery! Maybe the doctor should have had more foresight about the possible risks. Using the ER would have been a waste of resources but this IS the state of affairs in this state and country.

Did you check if the hospital has a pharmacy? I would think they would have to be open longer. It used to be Savon--(now Rite Aid) had a 24 hour pharmacy-- no more I guess?

That's pretty bad... I thought CVS and the Ralph's on Carrillo/Chapala had pharmacies open later, but nope. Just checked and both are open until 9pm weeknights, but close at 5:30 or 6:00 on weekends. If you have a prescription plan, always get the pain meds even if you think you won't need them. You'll be wishing at 2am that you had. I'll be curious if any advice shows up on this thread... really strange to have no pharmacy service after 6pm on a weekend! What's stranger still is that I bet there's more late service in Palmdale or Santa Maria.

So far the closest 24 pharmacy I found is CVS in Ventura on Telegraph rd. 5900 TELEGRAPH ROAD VENTURA, CA 93003 Phone: 805-642-3276 So I guess some of the CVS do stay open longer. Maybe it's time to petition the local CVS pharmacy to stay open longer.

Walgreens pharmacies are open 24/7, 365 days of the year. There is one in Goleta on Calle Real between Patterson and Fairview, not sure if there is one in SB.

Walgreen's site says Goleta pharmacy closes at 9 during the week and 6 on the weekend. Is the drive through open 24 hours?

No, the drive through isn't open later. Here are the hours, note the difference between "store hours" and "pharmacy hours." link

I was told, years ago, that all the pharmacies took turns staying open late over the weekend. Like most things, that must have changed!

I remember several years ago, the pharmacy in Loreto Plaza had a sign in the window that said they didn't sell Oxycontin. Too many robberies. Maybe it just simply got too dangerous to keep a pharmacy open at night. That's where we live.

111821: Oh... I guess mostly they do it behind the estate gates in Hope Ranch. Which makes it much better. And as if Alisos looks like Fifth Street in L.A. Please.

We had this same issue 5 years ago when my husband broke his scapula after being hit by a car while riding his bike. It happened midday, but he wasn't seen in the ER until well after 6 pm, we didn't get home until almost 9 pm. They gave us a prescription for pain meds, but didn't give him even one to get him through the night, I called all over trying to find an open pharmacy, none were open. I called the ER back and they said we couldn't get it filled at the hospital and wished us luck. My husband spent a miserable night, and I was furious...this brings it all back and makes me angry all over again.

This entire discussion is insane! For a community the size of Santa Barbara it would seem there would have to be a place to get a prescription filled after 6pm. That's nuts. Perhaps Cottage Hospital(s) with their strangle-hold monopoly grip on the city should at least provide the service from their numerous branches. How about it Cottage?

My brother owns a pharmacy in Ohio. They have a 24/7 hotline for emergency needs and will even deliver. I would have thought someone in Santa Barbara would offer the same type of service. So much for small town service I guess.

I too experienced this problem a year or so ago when I had emergency eye surgery and needed a prescription filled on a weekend evening. My wonderful husband drove to Ventura for me to get it filled. As a Santa Barbara native, I also couldn't believe we had not one pharmacy that was open late on weekends!

111815 - No, Walgreen's pharmacy closes at 9:00 pm. 111800 - Sav-On is now CVS, not Rite-Aid. OP - The answer to your question is no...there are no 24hr pharmacies in Santa Barbara.

111800- I called. None of the Cottage pharmacies fill outside prescriptions. Thank you 111808. That was the same information that we finally found. There is one 24 hour pharmacy in Ventura. It is a CVS. Irony is that they would not fill the RX for mom because it showed that the Carpinteria location filled it already (even though they were closed and it never got picked up). They also said that if her doctor called in a NEW prescription to them, it would have to be a cash pay and could not use her Medicare benefits because of the filled but not picked up prescription in Carp. Crazy! 111915P think an after hours emergency line would be a great idea. Even just 1 pharmacy in town. I think there are enough CVS for them to provide that service at a single location? 112078P You've got to trust me (or call/look at their website). Even Walgreen's closes at 6pm on the weekends. The funny part of it was that when I called her MD, she said in frustration.."Why didn't she pick it up earlier?" I kindly replied that she left mom with both eyes swollen shut and blood dripping from her nose with a ghastly headache. Her pre-op instructions said she did not need anyone to drive her home. Mom said that they noticed she looked pretty puny and said they would follow her home (silly thought) but never mentioned it again and let her go home alone. Mom's main support system is HER mom who is 93 and gets around (quite well) on a little rascal.

I'm glad she drove home on her own safely, but you gotta know I'm going to reprimand you/her for doing it. She could have called a cab. Highly inconvenient, and probably uncomfortable/embarrassing, but better than running over the child in the crosswalk she didn't see if her eyes were swollen shut. I found a Noozhawk article from 2009 about this. So the conversation has been "happening". Thanks for opening it up again. How do we fix this, so we have at least one 24 hr capable pharmacy? Maybe I'll try pleading to Walgreen's next time I'm there. Again, thank you. But talk with your mom about handling the driving better in the future?
